So before meet me was a glimmer in my eye, I started another haladriel western (way back in Feb 2023), & when I need a break from other projects it’s the thing I go & chip away at. Well, I think I might actually be close to finishing it. Here’s a revised snippet of the very first bit I ever wrote.

Text that reads:

Galadriel wakes to the harsh metallic snap of a rifle being cocked as a voice drawls, “Fate’s a fickle thing, friend, you never know which way it’ll turn.”

A wash of thin, cold light suffuses the barn's interior accompanied by a blast of frigid air from the now open door. She curses herself for not hearing the man's approach.

Slowly she lifts her gaze, trying not to wince as every muscle in her body protests even that small movement, and takes in the figure before her: his sturdy boots and heavy long wool coat caked in snow to the shins. He’s tall - very tall - and broad shouldered. His face is hard to see, shadowed by the brim of his hat, and partially obscured by the faded red scarf wrapped around his neck. Between his size and the state of her muscles, Galadriel actually doubts for a moment that she could take him if this comes to a fight, even if it weren’t for the rifle barrel he has leveled at her face.

Perhaps she can try a diplomatic approach for once.

Text that reads:

“On your feet, boy. Slowly. And keep your hands where I can see them.”

She stands, slowly as he'd asked, hands out to her sides with palms spread. Her gaze darts between his eyes and his finger where it rests aside the trigger.

Galadriel licks her lips, cracked from wind and cold and no water save melted snow the last twenty-four hours. When she speaks her voice is a harsh rasp. “I was traveling south, and got turned around in the storm. I came upon your barn, and sought shelter. I'll be on my way now that the weather has calmed.”

The hand not resting by the trigger darts forward faster than she anticipates, and yanks her hat off her head. The golden waves she keeps carefully braided and pinned beneath are mussed into a messy halo around her head from a night of sleeping rough. He laughs. He laughs loud and long. Galadriel bristles at the sound.

Text that reads:

“A woman? And Lindoner by the sound of it,” he snorts, whether in disbelief or derision she can’t quite tell. “You’re a long way from the city, sweetheart.”

She straightens up, squares her shoulders, and glares at him. “I am a duly sworn warrant officer and agent of the law in the court of High King Gil-galad. I'm also a licensed peace officer in Lindon, Eregion, the Greenwood, and all other territories under the purview of his court. I'm this far from Lindon because I'm looking for a man wanted on charges so foul that even the bravest of men would shit themselves in fear just to hear his misdeeds spoken aloud. Now, if you know what's best for you, you will lower your weapon, tell me where the nearest town is, and allow me to depart.”

So much for diplomacy.
