This was SUPPOSED to be an attempt at stargazing 😭 (CW for mild body horror I guess. Don't know if this will be finished or published, but meh.) #Haladriel (but also #Martanis because they're back in Valinor, but he was still 100% evil beforehand.)

Galadriel held out the wine. “Here.”

“I do not hunger, nor thirst,” said Sauron, flatly.

“You are veiled in flesh. The wine will steady your nerves.”

He sighed and finally turned his gaze toward her. There, in the fading light, she really saw for the first time, the uncertainty and fear hidden beneath the tears threatening to form. The gold surrounding his pupils seemed to fade, leaving a vivid red-brown that brought uncomfortable memories burbling to the surface.

Hesitantly, Sauron accepted the drink and adjusted his sitting position, using the gap between his middle and fourth finger to cradle the glass. Slowly, he brought the rim to his lips.

Galadriel gasped. She hadn’t noticed it before, the missing index finger. It was visible now, raw and stark, the skin puckered just above the knuckle. A reminder of what he was; what he might still be.

Sauron took a sip of wine, his throat bobbing. “The Valar do not wish me to forget.”

“You deserve much more,” Galadriel observed.

“Indeed I do,” he replied, placing the wine glass on the table. “What is?” he asked, noting the way her mouth fell open slightly. “Do you not expect me to acknowledge my errors?”

“Errors!” she exclaimed. “You say it with a tone that suggest you were merely a wayward child, disobeying your parents. No, Sauron, you are a murderer and a tyrant.”

He closed his eyes, stretching his neck toward the late evening breeze. She expected his wrath but instead received only conciliation. “You are right, my lady. And you should know that your observation is why I am here only temporarily. By morning, I will be gone.”

“Of what do you speak?” asked Galadriel, reaching behind her for the second chair. She sat down, lacing her fingers together on her lap.

“They are speaking to me, can you not hear them too?”

Galadriel shook her head.

“If I set foot outside your dwelling, my reprieve ends early,” said Sauron. “But at first light, I will become the wind again, sent back to drift around Middle-earth unloved and unmourned.”

“Which is—”

“—precisely what I deserve,” he interrupted. “Yes, I know.”

“Why send you here?” Galadriel asked, picking at the skin beneath her nails.

“I do not know, perhaps it is because… “ he hesitated, his expression unreadable as he glanced at her. “You were my last thought the moment my spirit irrecoverably splintered.”

Galadriel snorted. “You will not win my sympathy with sweet words, Dark One.”

“It is not sympathy I seek,” Sauron replied, taking another sip of wine. “When they pulled me from my torment, reassembling my body from nothing, stretching and squashing bone and blood vessels until all I knew was pain… they asked only one thing. My ears remained distant from my skull; my eyes burned within fire while many hands gored beneath my ribs—my heart pulsing as they squeezed it.

But I heard their whispering. It travelled lighting fast along the nerves still unspooling and contracting. I never knew taking physical form could feel so wretched. It was excruciating, and still my torment was not done. They pushed my eyeballs back into bare sockets and threaded the nerves beneath layers of scorching flesh floating above. I saw my blood, thick like tar, swirling around my mangled body. They held me there, incomplete and screaming for mere seconds; but it felt like an eternity.”

Sauron drained the wine glass and faced Galadriel again, his eyes shining. “And after all that,” he brandished his malformed hand, “still they refused to make me whole.”

“What did they ask you?” whispered Galadriel, feeling nauseous.

“They asked if this time, would I resist the urge to run and hide. They asked if I would beg for pardon and see it through.”

“What was your answer?”

His lip curled, a flirtatious smile forming. “I said I desired forgiveness from only one. And none among those who, moments before, had riffled through my guts with their fingers.”
