I LIKE a *lot* of shit: sci & tech (my day job!), environment & energy (ecomodernism), politics (~moderate, social-liberalism), culture & language(s), outdoors (mountains, cycling/MTB, sailing), travel, nuance & irony.
I HATE black-&-white simplism!

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

Raising the saliance of AI as an issue – and suggesting Americans should rally behind his new term for it – is a courageous* choice of political battle for Donald Trump to pick in the final weeks before the midterms. *this word has a different vernacular meaning in British English.

You may find it mildly amusing that in Gaelic the equivalent of outhouse is ‘taigh beag’ (literally small house) and now occasionally used by unaware non-speakers to name their. cottage 😏

One of the many things about the US I found strange when first I visited was the way Americans seemed completely unable to say the word “toilet”: you had to ask for the “restroom”. Which is ridiculous Except - when you stop to think about it, almost every word we have for the toilet is a euphemism

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

The effects of electoral systems: a new Constitution Unit project
Many claims are made about the effects of different voting systems, but to what extent are these backed up by evidence? And how might this evidence apply to Westminster elections? Alan Renwick introduces a new Constitution Unit project seeking to answer these questions in a way that is accessible for politicians, campaigners, journalists, and the public at large.

a lot of 🇬🇧 discussion about rejoining the EU under Burnham still assumes they would be welcomed back with open arms. But that’s is clearly not the case. If you were Macron/Merz, terrified of losing to AfD/Le Pen, why would you rush to make it look as if it’s easy for people to leave and then rejoin?

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.

This kinda also applies to the Tories here as esp demo’d by Brexit: The elite Tory leadership’s goals (Johnson, Gove et al) were neo-liberal globalist BUT they *sold* this - or hid it - under a socially conservative & specfcly anti-immigration platform. That platform has now eaten them as Reform.
