Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Thanks. Ultimately, I think novelty and priority are important, so reviewers'/editors' beliefs about novelty/priority are important, so it is wild to me to forbid authors from commenting on it. But yes other things are important and maybe claims about novelty are wrong so often a ban makes sense 121
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026It's like they are saying "don't try to help us understand how your work compares to existing work" 110
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026But, what part of "previous papers do X; we do Y" is bad for accumulating knowledge? This must not be what they mean by novelty claims. "We are the first to do Y" is very useful information if true, and can be refuted. 110
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026That seems like a terrible policy! I don't like false claims of novelty but why would you prevent authors from stating what is new 120

Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 11/07/2026I think that's right. If reviewers are going to do this on a revision they can't just say "look at this paper and write a review" 010

Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 09/07/2026But a lot of reviewer comments resort to "this choice should be explained/theorized/justified" when it would be more helpful to weigh in on whether it is a good choice 021
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 09/07/2026But maybe the reviewer means, "By thinking more about mechanism M_1 and how it differs from M_2, you might be able to come up with a way to distinguish between them; that's your job not mine". I guess that would be fine. 100
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Stylized example: Study looks at effect of D on Y, interprets it as operating through mechanism M_1. Reviewer writes, "The link between D and Y needs explicit theorization. Without it, it's not clear whether it operates through M_1 or M_2." This makes "theorization" sound like magic! 110
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Reviewers sometimes point out a problem in an empirical project and say it needs "theorizing". I'm not sure what this means and I wish reviewers would be more specific. 150
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Stuff like: (i) Make a bunch of plots of marginal and joint distributions and look into surprising values, (ii) Check for illogical data points (e.g. a speech attributed to an MP who is dead). The agent can probably help a lot with this and I have seen Claude do its own "sanity checks" (for math) 110
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 08/07/2026The only thing I'm sure about is that we should put more emphasis on something that was already under-emphasized before: how to check the results of the programming pipeline 2111
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 07/07/2026"This is a X, not a Y" is a perfectly good sentence structure. Also, it has become difficult not to suspect that Claude is involved when you encounter it. 000

Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 10/05/2026My model here is the UK, where the only thing a zebra crossing means is that everyone needs to stop for a pedestrian who is poised to cross (and everyone does). If it is a signalled crossing it looks totally different. 100
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 10/05/2026There are crosswalks cross stroads where people drive 50, and no one would ever try stepping out and expecting a driver to stop. My thing is that I wish we had different markings for those signalled crosswalks than for ones where drivers really should stop as you cross in a pedestrianized area 200
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Isn't part of the issue that there are identical-looking crosswalks where a pedestrian who stepped out in front of a car would be in the wrong? Like, where there is traffic light and a crossing signal. There is driver ignorance and also a design issue. 100

Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 08/01/2026Yes I have! Amazingly, every journal has its own long, idiosyncratic, and self-contradictory checklist spread across three web pages 030
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 30/11/2025If you have any ideas of how to accomplish that, I'd love to hear them. 130
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 30/11/2025Right. In practice this might require either delaying publication of the critique (with costs to critique authors and maybe the community) or foregoing peer review of the authors' "last word" rejoinder. In our standard procedure the original authors get to weigh in on the critique during our review. 280
Andy Eggers @aeggers.bsky.social · 30/11/2025What do you think we should be doing better/differently? I'm not directly involved in these cases, and I think some who were involved are not on the team anymore. In general our policy has been to welcome productive critiques/replications in the journal. 150
