No, I’m not denying the genocide, I’m saying that a growing population disproves a genocide is nonsense, since genocide can involve replacing a population with another. People coming in with the definition is often a way to deny what’s happening bc it’s a description of a past crime, not ongoing.

You’re barking up the wrong tree, friend, if your argument is about definitions of words and not what’s happening on the ground. (Besides the fact I used the words “ethnic cleansing” and not “genocide”.) Genocide is also typically retroactively assigned, so I don’t know what to tell you.

Like, I don’t know. I genuinely don’t know if people even know what they’re saying at this point. The population of North America exploded too once the settlers came. It doesn’t mean there wasn’t a genocide against the indigenous populations.

I don’t know how to say this without sounding glib, but isn’t that what ethnic cleansing is? Population replacement? The “population of Gaza” doesn’t mean Gazans. I would be shocked if we had any reliable data, like you say, but it sounds like that shows a successful invasion and resettlement.

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

In other words, it is the job of scientists to devise experiments that can test their claims, to always be cautious abt what they are claiming, and to critically evaluate the claims of other scientists. By these well-established standards, no serious science is happening behind Anthropic's claims.

It's the job of the media to scrutinize such statements and decide whether there's a story here at all (maybe the story is Anthropic researchers have fallen into a fantasy-land and brought many policymakers with them), not to just platform them. >>

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

I've been collecting pandemic era signs that nobody can be bothered to take down or remove. There's something grimly fascinating about this. Putting them up was urgent and important; removing them is nobody's job. How long will some of these hang around?
A tatty laminated sign that says: "This site is respecting social distancing. Please adhere to all guidelines on site." There are icons warning people to stay 2 metres apart, wash their hands, etc.A massive footprint on a pavement. Faded text warns people to keep 2 metres apart.A poster advising people on where to get help for domestic abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic.A sticker on a bench: "Safe seat. Alaa Alqaisi translating under the Gaza sky
Anne Carson's works often explore fragmentation in terms of language, time, and humanity. Her poetry lingers in places where meaning breaks down, leaving silence to take over. This Arabic text felt as if it were a response to her silences, refusing to let the faceless go unnamed; it resisted erasure and insisted on bearing witness. But translating it into English, the language that leans toward abstraction, was a delicate task. Arabic carries its weight differently; it's rooted in rhythm, layered in meaning, and resistant to facelessness. English, with its grammatical economy, can smooth over the jagged edges of Arabic's emotional density. How does one render the philosophical weight of this meditation on war as a continuum, a thread that binds human history together in blood and ash? These were not linguistic questions; they were moral ones. So I had the responsibility to ensure that the rawness of the original survived the journey into Carson's intellectual universe.

Don’t worry guys, Compact Magazine assures me it’s only unpublishable due to woke www.compactmag.com/article/ross...
hat does it take to get a fantasy novel published these days, if not a famous name and a great manuscript? Judging by The
Falcon's Children, a high epic fantasy by conservative New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, it seems the answer is a gimmick of some kind—ultra-violence, soft-core sex, identity politics.
Douthat's novel, the first in a planned trilogy, is being serially released on Substack after being turned down in two rounds of submissions to publishers, which speaks to the siloed nature of contemporary publishing rather than the merits of the book.
