Anyone else remember how 20 years ago the less than a second exposure of a breast with a nipple guard was somehow a great danger to all children? Fucking talk about obscenity.

My work process is a wonder of chaos but it pays off sometimes. I’ve been struggling to work up a section on lesbian pulp and relocated work to alcohol. Then discovered that three years ago I roughed out a good intro and a case study of a raid. Past procrastinating Richard for the win!

As much as I tease you numbers people, I love that you exist because I'd never have known this and it is just amazing how totally shitty reporting can present ammunition to bad faith actors.

Sometimes you see a title and rush to download it - and swear not to lose it in your TBR pile.

Just wrote "pulp, porn, and the post office" randomly in response to a colleague checking in and now I want to write an article just to use that as the title.

Writing about gay books and the post office that hated them and looked over to see this adorableness.

Exactly. The only time I’ve been moderately tempted to use it is when I was doing assessment bullshit. I fucking hate assessment bullshit which is why I was tempted though I still didn’t. But unlike this guy I hate bs busy work not my kid.

one of the biggest selling points of AI is that it will help you do the things you don't want to do more quickly and efficiently. whether these people realize it or not, what they *don't want to do* is remarkably revealing of their souls. basically the plot of the 2006 Adam Sandler movie "Click"

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

I wish these people would just understand that your right to bigotry is protected and bigotry doesn't become more acceptable because it is derived from religion. After all, his argument can be made about Loving and interracial marriage just as easily.

Remembering that the great threat to free speech was when a rando HR person suggested language to a mid level IT person to some folk who are silent when the state literally mandates language in education to please an unhinged president.

Doing notes on extragovernmental censorship and found one of my favorite titles, and the chapter is great too: “‘Say You Love Satan’: Teens and Popular Occulture in 1980s America” in the excellent Growing Up America: Youth and Politics since 1945 from Fieldston, Eckelman, and @renfro.bsky.social

Reliance interest is one of those things I roll my eyes at when lecturing. It only emerges when convenient. As I tell my students, after all Plessy certainly had enormous reliance interest involved.

This has been on my feed all day so I'm going to give it as fair as treatment as I can. Prof. Wolfers is well meaning & I get the intuition, but he's speaking outside his area of expertise and he's just wrong. Having lunch with someone you disagree with isn't going to "cure ideological bias." 🧵

My writing philosophy at the moment is adapted from Dory: just keep writing. 6000 words into this chapter and I'm not sure I've hit 30% of what I wanted to cover but I just can't stop the word vomit spewing out of me about the obscenity law. Future Richard is going to hate me when they have to edit.

Studies dating back to the 80s have found that men are not just “confused” about consent. They just don’t prioritize consent over things like power, domination, and sexual gratification. Men participating in a gang rape know they don’t have the victim’s consent.

Writing a lot of notes about obscenity law in the 40s-60s for this chapter with lines like "In the stupidest line of a fucking dumbass opinion, Justice X said" and laughing to myself about seeing how far in the process I can leave language like that in.
