Noted Surrey colony of at-risk swifts destroyed during nesting season
Campaigners say builders’ demolition of nest site highlights weak protection of wildlife from development A building that was a noted nesting site for swifts, among the UK’s most at-risk birds, has been demolished during the nesting season, highlighting significant weaknesses in the protection of wildlife from development, campaigners say. Contractors for the housebuilder Hill Group carried out the demolition of Regent House near Dorking station in Surrey over the last few weeks, during the nesting season which runs from 1 March to 31 August. To bring a smile to your face A 2,000 year-old figurine of two ‘Dancing Dogs’ 🐾❤️ Blackware ceramic, Colima, West Mexico, 200 BC - 200 AD. 📷 Princeton University Art Museum #Archaeology
This Princeton University Art Museum photo shows a blackware ceramic figurine of two stylised dogs which look as if they are dancing. They are standing upright on their hind legs, front legs raised, with paws resting against each other as if holding hands. The dog on the left has its face turned to front, with snout slightly raised and seeming to smile. The dog on the right, rests its raised snout against the cheek of its partner. The figures are rounded and smooth with short legs, pointed snouts, pointed ears, and short curved tails. They have oval-shaped incised eyes and their bodies and faces are decorated with incised lines, which according to the museum, represent folds of skin, indicating that these canines are Mexican hairless dogs.

Museum info:
“Comala, Late Formative Period, 200 BC –200 AD, Colima, West Mexico, Mexico, Mesoamerica, Dancing dogs. Blackware ceramic; 12.6 x 13.5 x 7.5 cm. Museum purchase (Object Number y1985-49)

Just travelled on train with a group of 12 year old? girls. They were in Friday afternoon hysterics the whole journey. I wanted to say “nothing will EVER be as funny again as it is now. Laugh while you are more carefree than you may ever be again.” Then I felt quite sad.

I was a voracious reader of David Attenborough’s books like this borrowed from the weekly library in the village hall when I was little. (Thanks, Cheshire County Libraries) But don’t let’s forget this man was also Controller of BBC Two from 1965-9! What a person!

Street scene. 3 chairs and some sort of box are stacked up in front of the food composting collection bin, making it impossible to access the foot pedal to raise the lid.

OK. So the new “learn a new skill to keep your brain working” for me is the continental style of #knitting - & hopefully learning two-colour knitting using a different hand for each colour. This is going to be fun after 60? years of “non-continental” knitting. #nimbleneedles videos look pretty good.

Reading a 1966 history PhD thesis is interesting on a 'meta' level. Huge amount of newspaper & census, poll books etc research - in an era of unsearchable microfilm/original bound copies. But interesting that the resulting thesis is a narrative with v little discussion of wider historiography. #PhD

Heartbreaking: Right now, thousands of Puffins are washing up along our coasts and further afield. It is devastating to see. These birds are Red-listed in the UK and already under serious pressure. Mass deaths like this, known as a “seabird wreck”, can take years for colonies to recover from...
A dead Puffin lies on wet sand, its black and white feathers darkened and slick against the beach. The bird rests on its side, wings folded, with its distinctive orange bill clearly visible against the pale sand.

My 1967 copy of Wuthering Heights is looking a bit sad. The sellotape holding the back and front on has gone hard and fallen off. Amongst all the current hype around the film, I want to read it yet again to remind myself what a horrific tale of obsession it is. Maybe finally a time for a new copy?
Photo of very battered paperback edition of Wuthering Height. Cover shows a very ‘60s looking Cathy and Heathcliff and dour farmhouse surrounded by swirling moors. The back and front covers are no longer attached to the book, which has some strange staining.
