What happens when physicists turn their tools on living systems? That's the question at the heart of the Physics of Life Symposium—and this year marks its fifth edition. Submit an abstract or register to attend by Aug. 14: bit.ly/4xJIPH7

This is how cc licenses operate today, but it doesn't have to be. We as authors decide which use cases are considered fair. You can choose if your license allows for comercial use, why not choose if it allows for it to be fed to AI models?

Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I don't think you need to make it ilegal, just make it very hard and make it clear that Biorxiv won't cooperate with those use cases. If Studios decided they don't like Rotten Tomatoes the site will cease to exist, no matter the legality of it.

Imagine those in the 1% for this year having to worry about maintaining their status for every preprint they submit!

Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I agree, you can do more than that, you can block them from accessing your servers, add a clause to make it ilegal to rank paper that have opted out, etc. I love Biorxiv and the work you do, but you are not a passive observer, you are a steward of the content and have a say on how it gets accessed.

Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I agree, if this doesn't change I'll probably start looking for other ways to preprint my work.
000
Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
And I don't think you need to change licenses to do this. Add a check box so that authors can opt out (or even better opt in) from being ranked by qed or any other clone that might show up, and prevent them from accessing those preprints.

Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Ranking papers using unidimensional rankings is a flawed proposition and there's no amount of tweaking, disrupting or AI that will fix it. We should fight against the tirany of impact factors and glam journals, not trying to replace them by other, equally flawed, measures.

Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
From what I read on X it gave the impression that qed partnered with Biorxiv to do this, and if you knew this was coming it seems like a betrayal to the spirit of the license. I'm not talking about the legality of this, I'm saying that this is a breach of trust and against what Biorxiv stands for.
120
Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Honesty, it feels like a bit of a betrayal on the part of Biorxiv and something that fair use licenses were not written to deal with. I think Biorxiv should have give the option to have preprints excluded from this type of rankings.

Adrian Jacobo @adrianjacobo.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
There seems to be a high overlap between those who like qed and and those who received a good score or were selected for the 1%. I wonder how they'll feel when their next paper is scored low with no explanation or appeal.

If you ask your llm to identify the authors of annonimized preprints it wasn't trained on, how often does it get the last author and affiliation right?

When several neuromasts are stimulated simultaneously, these patterns are encoded sparsely, and neurons separate patterns through nonlinear integration.

He found that neuromasts show no topographic organization in the hindbrain, yet neurons are highly discriminative of stimuli.

Nico and Brian built a single-objective lightsheet microscope along with an offset stimulation arm. That allowed Nico to play the lateral line "like a piano" and stimulate any combination of neuromasts he wanted.

PSA: around 5-8% of the population has a color vision impairment for red/green. Many talks at #2025ICDB still use red-green LUTs on slides that are not accessible to everyone. Changing to more accessible colors is doable and easy. We can do better. #devbio #ICDB2025 #WeTheColorBlind

Zebrafish Rock! 🎃 @zebrafishrock.bsky.social · 16/04/2025
Published 40 years ago, Metcalfe et al. were first to fully characterize the lateral line (a series of sense organs on skin that detect water flow) in #zebrafish larvae. Included within this seminal piece are meticulous hand-drawings that are commonly found in Kimmel's papers. #ZebrafishFunFacts 🧪
 A. Neuromast of a live zehrafish larva. This is the first neuromast ipsilateralof the dorsal line viewed with Nomarski optics. Kinocilia (K) project into a gelatinous cupula (C) from hair cells (HC). Credit to Metcalfe et al. 1985Composite drawing of labeled efferent and afferent neurons. HRP was applied to a lesion of the midbody line branch of the right posteriorlateral line nerve (PLLn). The Irsim did not include the dorsal (D) oroccipital(0) branches. Labeled affercnt neurons of the posterior lateral lineganglion (PLLg) terminate in the hir:dbrain (PLLt). Three types of neurons (RELL, ROLE, and DELL) project axons into the posterior lateral line nerve. Only a single cell of each type is shown. This is a composite drawing traced from two preparations sectioned in the horizontal plane. Scale bar = 50 um
