I wrote to then NDIS minister Bill Shorten (also my local MP) urging him to expand the eligibility of the hearing services program as the cost of hearing aids is an equity issue. His staff refused to consider it as every problem needed the NDIS hammer which I can’t see how it helps.

In solidarity with Canada and Mexico, I offer this still-timely reminder from Tommy Douglas. Douglas was a Canadian politician who helped launch universal healthcare in Canada.
Picture of Canadian politician Tommy Douglas and a quote from him: “Once more, let me remind you what fascism is. It need not wear a brown shirt or a green shirt. Fascism begins the moment a ruling
class, fearing the people may use their
political democracy to gain economic
democracy, begins to destroy political
democracy in order to retain its power
of exploitation and special privilege."

Here’s something we see far too often - car paraphernalia lazily intruding on pedestrian space. When cars & their junk signage already hog so much of the street space. At very least plonk it in the parking lane!

Criticism of technology has a history. We have to look back as we look forward. Our pushback on insidious tech (and especially edtech) has to be as nuanced as possible. 🧵

We need to do everything to stop Dutton and his insane nuclear power wish. I'm not opposed to nuclear on safety grounds, I'm opposed on the basis that its slower and more expensive. If only the incumbent PM was capable of making decisions rather than two way bets.

I think this question to teachers about “what are you actually trying to achieve?” is at the heart of so much of what learning design is about. So many assumptions about what teaching is that forget what learning is. So alive in the #AIineducation debates #ascilite2024

“I’m a bit of a jack of all trades: I’ve been a pilot and I’ve been a TV presenter” says a former school teacher, Chris Kenyon, presenting at an academic conference on computers in learning in tertiary education. And I think most of us can relate to that! #ascilite2024

Disappointed that this lecture theatre is really not set up for accessibility for Deaf/HoH. We’ve gone from not using a mic, to using a mic but the presenter being fixed in position to giving the presenter a handheld that has no volume. We’re now back attached to the lectern mic. #ascilite2024

In true academic fashion Gregor Kennedy begins #ascilite2024 by critiquing methodology dichotomies. Makes an excellent point about the similarities between the debates we are having now and those that were taking place 20 years ago

Kicking off the week with a reminder that bike lanes are a sound public health investment. This could be one reason the state government might not want to allow the new City of Melbourne Mayor to remove bike lanes. www.reuters.com/article/busi...

Bike lanes are a sound public health investment
Every $1,300 New York City invested in building bike lanes in 2015 provided benefits equivalent to one additional year of life at full health over the lifetime of all city residents, according to a new economic assessment.
