✉️ Explore 145,000 medieval merchant letters as a live map: the correspondence network of Francesco di Marco Datini (c.1363–1412), spanning Florence to Barcelona to North Africa. Visualise routes, travel times & seasonality. docuracy.github.io/datini/ #DigitalHumanities #MedievalHistory
A dark-themed interactive map of the medieval western Mediterranean showing 14th-century merchant letter routes as curved arcs coloured from cyan (fast, 0–5 days) through yellow to red (30+ days). Short land routes between Tuscan cities glow cyan; longer sea routes to Barcelona and Majorca burn orange and red, revealing the unpredictability of medieval maritime travel.
(299 characters)

Long (accessible description for screen readers / figure caption):
Screenshot of the Datini Letters Geospatial Explorer in Travel Time mode. A dark basemap of the western Mediterranean is overlaid with curved arc lines connecting pairs of cities in the Datini merchant network. Arc colour encodes average letter delivery time on a gradient from cyan (near-instant, 0–5 days) through green and yellow (one to two weeks) to orange and deep red-magenta (more than 30 days). Dense clusters of fast cyan arcs radiate from Florence and Pisa across Tuscany, reflecting the reliable day-or-two land post. Arcs reaching westward to Barcelona, Valencia, and Palma de Majorca shift to orange and red, capturing the slower and far more variable sea routes that could take anywhere from a week to several months. City nodes are shown as circles: pink for the main Datini fondacos (Pisa, Florence, Barcelona, Genoa, Valencia, Majorca) and blue for correspondent cities. A sidebar on the left shows the Travel Time mode is selected, with a cyan-to-red colour legend and a filter slider for minimum letters per route.

And here is an impression of two grown Pope trees in a setting with smaller Pope plants, in a garden watered by angels, and supervised by a few Saints. The Pope plants and trees are easy to grow, do not fall for Protestant propaganda claiming otherwise!
A printed image from 1697: a garden, with angels doing the gardening, a saint overlooking the activities. In the front are small plants with images of Popes, and on the left and right are two trees with lots of Popes' images.

A call for a co-editor, which reads:

The Journal of Religious History is seeking expressions of interest in the role of co-editor of the Journal to work alongside Dr Celeste McNamara. The new co-editor will take over from Dr Miles Pattenden. The position would run for a three-year period, subject to a one-year probationary period, with potential for renewal for a second three-year term, if so desired. The JRH is published by Wiley and engages an Editorial Manager (Professor Paul Watt) to work on practical matters relating to the Journal, as well as benefiting from support from Wiley staff and an international editorial board. While the position is a voluntary one, the agreement between Wiley and the Religious History Association may allow for limited travel support each year to promote the journal, subject to the approval of the RHA executive committee. The tasks involved in editing JRH vary considerably from week to week some weeks we are only required to answer a few emails, other weeks require a full day's work making decisions on articles and proofreading. On average, each editor probably spends 4-6 hours per fortnight on the role. The main tasks involved are: representing the Journal at appropriate events attending committee meetings of the Religious History Association to report on the JRH working with the Editorial Manager to make initial decisions about sending articles for review keeping the database of reviewers updated making decisions on each article based on the reviewers' recommendations corresponding with authors about these decisions checking revisions for Early View proofreading and approving each issue approving the table of contents selecting an image for the cover shortlisting articles for the annual prize Applications (a letter outlining qualifications, experience and fit with the Journal and Association's general remit, and a brief CV) should be submitted by May 1, 2026, to: Professor Megan Cassidy-Welch mcassidywelch@divinity.edu.au

A future in which [ANU] brings up the rear of the Group of Eight and then, unable to compete, evolves in short time into a middle-ranking Australian regional university. That is what is at stake here, writes Frank Bongiorno #auspol #ANU
johnmenadue.com
Change proposals risk relegating ANU to middle-ranking regional uni
Well known historian and long-time ANU staff member, Frank Bongiorno, says he has never seen, such a lack of vision, such a vacuum of ideas, such general disorganisation, nor such cavalier decision-making about institutions and programs built up through hard work over decades in all his years at ANU. He outlined his concerns in this submission to ANU management.

The latest round of cuts at ANU include an outrageous plan to close the Australian National Dictionary Centre (ANDC). ANU has forgotten its vital function as the national university. Please sign this petition urging ANU to reconsider and protect the ANDC: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
Why the ANDC Matters?

- The ANDC is Australia’s leading centre for lexicographical research, jointly funded by ANU and Oxford University Press.
- It is the definitive authority on Australian English—documenting regionalisms, Aboriginal English, and producing landmark publications like the Australian National Dictionary.
- Its widely celebrated “Word of the Year” initiative connects Australians with their evolving language and identity.
- For ANU, it provides immense national and international visibility—while operating as a low-cost, high-impact asset.

The Cost of Closure:
- Damage to Australian English: Halting systematic documentation of our unique national language.
- Setback for Indigenous Languages: Undermining efforts to research and preserve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
- Erosion of National Identity: Undermining the role of language in shaping how Australians see themselves, their history, and their culture.
- Damage to ANU’s Reputation: Compromising its mission as a national university and leader in cultural heritage research.
