It's remarkable how many inconsistencies in hyphenation (e.g. "key-hole" vs "keyhole") in EPUBs of The Hobbit can be traced to one print edition having an ambiguous soft-hyphen in that place. (I found the same with the Silmarillion back in 2019) Article coming soon...

🏛️ Before the Internet, computer clubs helped people learn, trade software & explore personal computing. A surviving binder of 50 Atari newsletters from August 1987 offers a time capsule of that world. Explore the Atari collection & more computer history: blog.archive.org/2026/08/27/a... 🧵

This is sort of a joke but also sort of serious because I do find Christopher Tolkien a fascinating figure. The son of a great man who devotes his later life to publishing the life work that his father was never able to put together himself. There's a great novel in there, I feel like.

The doctor who claimed that vaccines cause autism lost his medical license for faking for the study. But his lies and the damage he did to public health persist long after his paper was pulled. This is why science communication is so difficult; all it takes is one grifter.

I've just realized that (I think) I never shared my Opinion on the Stephen Colbert LOTR filler-movie! While I expect Hunt for Gollum to be absolute dreck, this one I am CAUTIOUSLY hopeful for. But I think it can ONLY work one of two ways--

Today marks 250 years since a small group of newspaper editors, farmers, and soldiers signed a document declaring our nation's independence — a truth that feels self-evident now but was revolutionary then.
What a privilege us Americans have, to live in a nation that every one of its inhabitants can shape. What an honor us New Yorkers have, to look out over our city's waters from the shores where so many Americans bravely entered their country for the first time.
Today and all days, let us remember that patriotism is not pretending our nation is without flaws. Patriotism is every act of righteous dissent — because loving our country means fighting for the best version of it.
Happy Fourth of July, New York City.

I don’t think it will win Best Picture or Best Actor, but I really loved “Train Dreams” and Joel Edgerton is absolutely amazing in it. Also, love seeing Bryce Dessner, a member of one of my favorite bands (The National), getting a nomination for original song with Nick Cave.
