My dissertation has been approved and archived! You can find it at hdl.handle.net/2429/95478 . It's a community-engaged study of trans joy, as well as a mixed media zine. The finished product is full of care, color, insight, and, well, joy! I truly could not be more proud 🥹

The Cambridge academic has rightly now resigned. But that won’t end the targeting of senior black figures or the lazy way institutions promote faux equality, says Guardian columnist Jason Okundaye

Passed the defense with no revisions, so that's a wrap on the PhD! The defense was honestly so much fun; what a delight to end 7 years in a room full of thoughtful, kind people asking fantastic questions.

Check out this 6 month old giant baby I'm hanging out with today
A large black and tan great Dane puppy with a black and white face sits on a cream and brown dog bed. they are outside on a balcony. The dog, Waverly, looks right into the camera with a very serious face. She is snuggled up with a long chew toy made of brown jute.

When he saw our sign 50 years later, he was transported back to that moment. "I just had to come in and thank you," he said. What a gift, to receive his testimony and remember the lives Spartacus touches. People often ask why we work at Spartacus if we aren't getting paid. This is why. 4/4

He found his books and still, nobody gave him any trouble. That was important to him. He could just exist in the space. The books and the feeling of Spartacus became a cherished lifeline. He constantly feared what would happen if his parents found them, but having them was worth the risk. 3/4

We wound up recording his testimony, which I share with permission. As a closeted kid on the Island, he would listen to gay radio in secret. One day he gathered all his courage and travelled to Spartacus. When he walked in, nobody batted an eye. "They knew I needed to be there." 2/4

Heartwarming story time: yesterday a man came into the shop and asked if we're the same Spartacus Books that used to be on Hastings (we are!). When I mentioned our old location in the Dominion Building, he told me how 50 years ago, as a scared gay teen, he bought his first gay books there. 1/4

Also moved from New York to Vancouver and potatoes on pizza here is still viscerally upsetting. (If you do ever want NY style pizza, get the frozen Suprema pizzas in the black box. Trust me.)

It’s not hyperbole that part of what kept the queer liberation movement going in the Reagan era was the partying part of the “bury your friends in the morning, protest in the afternoon, and dance at night” schedule. Without joy there is no air left to fight

They take in nutrients from organic matter decomposing in the soil/wood/whatever they're in. Plants take up minerals and all from the ground and mostly rely on other organisms to break down organic matter (with exceptions, ofc)

P sure it's because mushrooms aren't plants and their primary sustenance isn't from the earth, but also if you use ha-adamah for them it still counts. Weirdly I think some other plant-based halachic things do apply to mushrooms, but maybe not all of them? It's esoteric but fun to sort through

This is probably gonna gain traction soon, so I want to ground everyone before the fear that may come. The purpose of memos like this is probably best understood as to create fear. If they had the resources and ability to conduct mass crackdowns on trans groups, they would just do it.

75 pages in, and this is the most fun I've had with a novel in a while. Like, the kind of fun that also involves squirming uncomfortably and vividly reliving parts of my childhood. I'll be craving Katz's and also looking over my shoulder for days. I promise it's enjoyable.

One of our regulars at @spartacusbooks.net has deemed this book too Cursed for the shelves, so obviously I must drop everything and read it immediately (@scumbelievable.bsky.social immaculate cover!)
A light skinned hand holds up a copy of Black Flame by Gretchen Felker-Martin. On the cover, a pale person with short black hair and film coming out of their mouth and wrapping their neck. Black tears fall out of eyes that are all pale yellow. The yellow of the eyes is shiny and raised above the page, as are the title (white and blue iridescent?, wavy thin letters) and author name. The rest of the cover is matte. The printmaker behind this is an artist. Anyway, that's the picture.

(I've wanted to get into that research forever but realistically never will. In my case it'd be something about the collaborative, trans-temporal, semi conversational nature of theorizing in the Talmud and what that says about meaning making. Somehow Reddit feels relevant in a way I can't explain?)

Addye Susnick @addye.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
So this is off the cuff "political theorist does law" territory, but there's definitely something in contested interpretations of many legal and ethical issues written into the Talmud over time that could be interesting for contemporary discourses around parallel questions.

Once again thinking about Bob Dylan's 1978 album Street Legal, which imo is an album that's fundamentally about being over waiting and pursuing agency and change. (This thought has been in my brain for a solid year now, and I fear I'll have to write an essay to get it out.)
