My dissertation has been approved and archived! You can find it at hdl.handle.net/2429/95478 . It's a community-engaged study of trans joy, as well as a mixed media zine. The finished product is full of care, color, insight, and, well, joy! I truly could not be more proud 🥹

Passed the defense with no revisions, so that's a wrap on the PhD! The defense was honestly so much fun; what a delight to end 7 years in a room full of thoughtful, kind people asking fantastic questions.

Check out this 6 month old giant baby I'm hanging out with today
A large black and tan great Dane puppy with a black and white face sits on a cream and brown dog bed. they are outside on a balcony. The dog, Waverly, looks right into the camera with a very serious face. She is snuggled up with a long chew toy made of brown jute.

Heartwarming story time: yesterday a man came into the shop and asked if we're the same Spartacus Books that used to be on Hastings (we are!). When I mentioned our old location in the Dominion Building, he told me how 50 years ago, as a scared gay teen, he bought his first gay books there. 1/4

Fr y'all I just finished a whole entire doctoral dissertation about this and encountered so many people for whom (trans) joy is a kind of breath, a possibility, a stoking that keeps the embers of resistance burning.

It’s not hyperbole that part of what kept the queer liberation movement going in the Reagan era was the partying part of the “bury your friends in the morning, protest in the afternoon, and dance at night” schedule. Without joy there is no air left to fight

One of our regulars at @spartacusbooks.net has deemed this book too Cursed for the shelves, so obviously I must drop everything and read it immediately (@scumbelievable.bsky.social immaculate cover!)
A light skinned hand holds up a copy of Black Flame by Gretchen Felker-Martin. On the cover, a pale person with short black hair and film coming out of their mouth and wrapping their neck. Black tears fall out of eyes that are all pale yellow. The yellow of the eyes is shiny and raised above the page, as are the title (white and blue iridescent?, wavy thin letters) and author name. The rest of the cover is matte. The printmaker behind this is an artist. Anyway, that's the picture.

Once again thinking about Bob Dylan's 1978 album Street Legal, which imo is an album that's fundamentally about being over waiting and pursuing agency and change. (This thought has been in my brain for a solid year now, and I fear I'll have to write an essay to get it out.)

Black and white photos printed on wood. To the left, Renty, an older man with dark brown skin and a strong face stares into the camera. He is shown in a suit (based on one worn by Frederick Douglass) made entirely of staples. On the right, his daughter Delia, a young black woman with soft features, is adorned with a staple dress (based on one warm by Harriet Tubman). Both images were created by Sasha Huber, who printed the daguerreotypes (in which Renty and Delia are nude) on wood and covered their undressed bodies in meticulous staple art.

Honestly when you think of a dissertation as an end in itself rather than a career prerequisite, it's really cool and fun. Of course it's also stressful and hard, but what *isn't* stressful in the year of our lord are 2026?

I thought everyone who told me "you end up writing half the dissertation in the last month" was joking, but I'm delighted that they weren't! In the last push, and it's a joy (lol) to just sit down and write nonstop about something I know and care so much about, now with a clear end in sight.

I'm going to do a thread of all the references and context behind Bad Bunny's performance and what it means for Puerto Ricans to see this on the biggest stage. The opening title screen is a street mural in Puerto Rico that comes to life with footballs as coconuts. Follow along!
A vibrant, wide-angle photo of a colorful outdoor mural promoting the "Super Bowl LX Apple Music Halftime Show." The mural is painted on a long blue wall in a sunlit, tropical setting with real palm trees and bright pink bougainvillea flowers cascading over the top.

The artwork features a playful, surreal collage of cultural and football-themed elements:

Central Text: The Apple Music logo in bold yellow and red 3D lettering is flanked by "SUPER BOWL LX" above and "HALFTIME SHOW" below.

Iconic Imagery: Large illustrations of a golden trumpet, pink sunglasses, maracas, dominoes, and a cup of coffee with a musical note in the foam.

Football Elements: Brown footballs are depicted growing on palm trees like coconuts and resting on the ground.

Foreground: A young girl in a yellow dress walks along the sidewalk in front of the mural, passing a small goalpost illustration where a green parrot is perched.

The overall aesthetic is warm, festive, and celebrates a fusion of Latin-inspired culture and American football.

Any decentralised horizontal egalitarian group is a demonstration of anarchism in practice. Any friend group chipping together or a stranger giving mutual aid. Whether bread, eyewash or a couch to sleep on. We don't need to work at a national scale to start making a difference.
