We’re living through a campaign of discrimination comparable to many historical abuses. It’s shocking to me how many people are capable of identifying state-sanctioned bigotry when they encounter it in a history book, but cannot recognize it at all when they encounter it in a newspaper.

Look at Solidarity in Poland (or the contemporary fight for democracy in Poland for that matter) or our own civil rights movement or any other dissident movement. You don't defeat authoritarian movements by capitulating in advance and agreeing with them that elections and laws don't matter.
