This weekend's project, adding a double socket behind the fridge freezer that's connected to the house battery backup system Our off grid system is an early setup that provided some sockets rather than the whole house I've added the fridge freezer to the circuit, next is the router & switchs etc

I've started the automation of growing plants So far the automation software controls the heated bed, the fans, the led lights etc I'm adding a cheap pump that I used to use at the allotment to enable watering on demand, I need to make it smart first 🙂 I'm already seeing results with the lettuce

It's Friday.. so it's feed the sourdough starter day Sourdough is made over the weekend and cooked on Monday I'm slowly getting better at it, each loaf is a lesson 🙂

Interesting.. I'll be able to do a like for like comparison as I'm leaving the big antenna up there & adding the +4di I did some wardriving and the current antenna isn't doing that well so something is wrong

My toe dip into the world of #meshcore has been interesting I've decided that the huge +12dbi gain antenna has too narrow a pattern for my needs, it's like a super concentrated torch beam I'm going to change it for a +4dbi with a pattern more like a lantern This pic shows roughly what I mean

Well it seems there's plenty of other preppers out there 🙂 The old heltec V2 that I'm currently running #meshcore firmware on is being replaced with a newer v4 very soon With the new antenna & new radio I should see a big increase in direct neighbours The alternative comms are nearly in place 🙂

Every time someone links to this film, I have to repost it. It's one of the most significant bits of British 20th century art. Everything about it is incredible. Groundbreaking music production by Daphne Oram. Amazing camera work by Wolfgang Suschitzky (who later filmed Get Carter).-

Well, the emergency meshcore repeater is working And because I live on a hill surrounded by flat lands I can probably cover most of Hull 🙂 So if the zombie apocalypse hits, at least we can send text memes to each other Next job is to replace the current crappy 868mhz antenna with a better one

Strawberry runners have also been pinned down & potted They'll be transferred to the allotment next season I need to 3d print a load more pins as I've run out already 😶 I've not touched the ones at the allotment, I reckon, in total, there's about 150 runners to pot on 😶😶😶😶

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I've potted on a load of lettuce, it's the one crop we eat nearly daily so is always with growing our own

The allotment tunnel had a bit of a clear out I removed the courgette plants, they started with mildew, it always happens this time of year The tomatoes are still producing, I reckon 3 more weeks max I'm making more Strattu with this lot of tomatoes🙂

I finally got organised enough to add some lighting to the allotment shed It was a dark place before, now you can actually see to make a cup of tea! It's made from a proper Finnish sauna with super thick walls Very solid 🙂

Yeah.. the fridge freezer, after 23 years it has finally died 😭 I could mess around with replacing PCBs and fans etc in the hope it sorts it, but modern ones are so much more energy efficient So out with the old & in with the new In the mean time I've added some temp fans to limp it along

The IBC is fully plumbed in, there's about 28m2 of roof to feed into this IBC I just need to get a nylon filter sock to remove the big bits 🙂
010
Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
A quick update on "project rain runoff" I've put the IBC in place (it had to be manhandled over my neighbours fence) What's not shown in this picture are the two downpipes that are feeding into the top of the IBC nor the overflow that feeds back into the drain This should hold 1000ltrs 🙂
010
Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
I'm off next week, I will be spending some of the time adding an IBC water container to the guttering of the shed It'll hold about 900ltrs, we've already got 4 x 200ltr water buts, so this will double the capacity Water for the garden, but also available for any emergency - always prepping :-)

Here's the allsky astro camera riser thingy I mentioned yesterday in its natural habitat Next up- I need to design & print a support for the dew heater to reduce fatigue on the connection You can see that it's dipping down where the power connector is, it's the yellow thingy around the camera

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I got all the parts to make an allsky astro camera I got them for Christmas last year 😶 It's been on my list of projects and finally its time has come First up, I need to raise the camera so it can sit in a perspex dome, so here's the little table I've (poorly) designed in Freecad

The results of yesterday's operation Strattu.. It's a tomato fruit leather that I'll put into clan jars and cover with olive oil, it should last about a year in the fridge. The flavour is very intense & perfect to add to any dish, the taste of sunshine 🙂

Operation 'Strattu' is go..

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
It's now in the fridge, it's cloudy until Tuesday, so I'll make the (pretend) Strattu when the sun's out and I can use solar power to run the dehydrator

They've been through a mechanical mill & an electric food squisher/juicer Not much solid stuff left at the end - and no seeds 🙂 Now to reduce the tomatoes to a thick paste
010
Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
The first heating is complete, now to push the tomatoes through a mill a few times to remove the skins and seeds
000
Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Today.. I've a load of tomatoes from the poly tunnel so I'm going to attempt to make Strattu For authenticity I need days of really strong Sicilian sunshine, but without that I'm going to use a dehydrator I'll let you know how it goes

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

Fingers crossed, so far it's been very stable. The only dropout I've had so far is when I accidently remotely switched off 4g data on the router when I meant to switch off the WiFi 😑 It meant popping down and switching it back on..

This bodes well for the meat of operation "lazy allotment" This consists of a fully automated watering system using pumps & valves that will be controlled by the pi (or me pressing buttons) I'll need feedback via CCTV or flow meters, but I'm planning it now in readiness for next year

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Project "lazy allotment" is coming along nicely I've installed the 4g router & raspberry pi mqtt/ZigBee coordinator The ZigBee network can be seen in the tunnel, which really pleases me The pi & router use hardly any power & the 100ah battery isn't being touched overnight 😶

Three panel comic. Panel 1: two friends are playing cards. There is a birdcage hanging behind them, just peaking out of frame. Friend 1 asks, “does your bird talk?” To which friend 2 replies, “Please… don’t.” Panel 2: friend 2 continues, head in hand, “he’s on this alpha male influencer thing right now.” Behind him, the bird - posed and wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket - is leaning forward on a tiny easy chair in his enclosure. Panel 3: with his hands clasped, easing back into his chair, the bird says, “stops eating seeds. Focus on your net worth.”

I'm surprised at how little electricity it's using, 600w.. I've got a heat exchanger so it's slightly less efficient than a normal setup, the internal CH temp is starting nicely above the dew point & so far 🤞 there's no condensation 🙂

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Today is the big test of the ashp cooling I switched it on at 13:40pm I've closed all the doors & windows The kitchen has fan assisted plinth heaters so they're working really well in bringing the temp down, the rest of the house is slower but still noticeable when you step outside

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
🙂 TBF - I've a drawer full of the resistors, but didn't want to mess my warranty up, so opted for the official resistor.. 😑 This is an 'older' version of the adapter, the newer version (same 4.7k resistor) is £80-200 😶
000
Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
I've got temp/humidity sensors in every room so can dynamically set the flow temp every minute in response to the dew point I thought it was worth £15 for an experiment If it works then I'll look to put in a separate insulated circuit with hydronic fan cooling units in a few rooms
000
Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
Yes and potentially.. But... As long as I keep the water temp above the dew point then I won't get condensation forming It's not the most effective way of cooling as I'll need a spare dedicated cooling circuit for that, but if I can reduce the house temp by a few C then I'll be happy

Adam Jennison @adamjennison.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
Well.. £15 spent on a 4.7k resistor wrapped up in a Vaillant sticker has enabled cooling on my ashp 🙂 That's another reason to switch over from gas - NB if you're thinking of ashp & you want cooling, make sure you ask if it's capable as not all are, e.g. Vaillant are but ideal heating are not
