Thanks! It might be a fleeting visit as still very hectic (far too much so for my liking) with real-world stuff (but I'll be back to regular posting of poppycock at some stage)

It didn't sound like you were nagging in the slightest (was just writing out my posting intentions as a general update). The real world stuff has mostly all been good stuff (writing, planning move back to Australia) but I'll still be glad when the hecticness calms down alright!

Thank you - it's actually mostly been good real-world stuff (writing projects and arranging moves to Australia and whatnot)

Everything went a bit hectic with writing plus arranging a move to Australia but I'll hopefully be posting a bit more (if not as prolifically as before) over the next few months

Thank you, Andrew - real life took over a bit (and still taking up most of my valuable posting-nonsense-time) but hope to be back more regularly sometime fairly soon

I'll try to post every now and then but still a bit slammed with writing and arranging move back to Australia (flying out week after next and will be there for around six months)

I've been offline for a few months but I had to return to post that important list about The Killers because “All These Things That I’ve Done” was released on this day in 2004 (22 years ago!)

That was good timing as I just logged back in for the first time in over three months. I'm still a bit inundated with real-world stuff at the moment but will try to post a bit again over the next few months

Before the Jaffa-Cakes-are-cakes-actually crowd start arriving with their flimsy "but but the VAT case" or "the clue is in the name" or the sham soggy/hard science arguments let me just say that Jaffa Cakes will always be biscuits to me and it's not even worth trying to move me on this.

Behold my manatea.
A silicone tea infuser in the shape of a manatee (or dugong; I’m unclear of the difference). It’s pale duck egg blue and smiling. Its front limbs are hooked over the edge of a white mug; the rest of it has small holes for brewing purposes, then its tail is again solid. It comes apart just below its armpits (finpits? Flipperpits?) for filling and emptying.

Criminally, this was not sold as a “manatea”. Do better, marketers.

The second best phrase I’ve heard for very warm weather is from the US South and goes “it’s hotter than two hamsters fucking in a wool sock.” And the best phrase I’ve heard is from Afrikaans and goes die hond die kat jaag, maar beide loop. It means “the dog is chasing the cat, but both are walking.”

Happy International Tea Day! My favourite phrase for when given a non-full cup of tea is “are you expecting stormy weather?” And my favourite phrase for when given a cup of tea that isn’t strong enough is “that tea’s as strong as a fortnight.“

My favourite Finnish one is "Ei menny niin kuin Strömsössä" [Didn't go like in Strömsö]. STRÖMSÖ is a Finland-Swedish TV show where they cook and craft and everything's so easy-breezy and lovely and quaint and always goes according to plan, presenting this Finland-Swedish utopistic way of existence
