As an academic, it feels like some colleagues have lost the ability to engage deeply: they don't want to read an article unless it directly answers a question they already have... basically like using a chatbot they only want an answer to a current issue & not to actually learn anything or explore.

Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less.

Don't believe self-serving lies about technologies being "inevitable" or "here to stay". You don't have to just go along with the dominant narrative. You can make deliberate choices and help others to do the same.
Be intentional about deciding your own moral and ethical boundaries up front. Don't settle for the lie of compromising your principles "just for now" until you can find something better.
Cultivate your ability to think deeply. Do whatever it takes to carve out distraction-free bubbles for yourself in both space and time. This might mean saying no to technologies or patterns of working that others say are critical or inevitable.
Care deeply about your craft. Refactor code until it is clear and elegant. Write good documentation for other humans to read. Have the courage to go slowly, especially when everyone else is telling you that you need to go fast and cut corners.
Care more about people, relationships, and justice than you do about profits, code, or productivity.
Above all, be motivated by love instead of fear.

they're saying the AI can do math and science again, so it's time to reread Thurston's On Proof and Progress in Mathematics, a lovely articulation of the social work of assembling understanding, i.e., the best reason to tackle hard problems. www.ams.org/journals/bul...
When I started as a graduate student at Berkeley, I had trouble imagining
how I could "prove" a new and interesting mathematical theorem. I didn't
really understand what a "proof was.
By going to seminars, reading papers, and talking to other graduate students,
I gradually began to catch on. Within any field, there are certain theorems and
certain techniques that are generally known and generally accepted. When you
write a paper, you refer to these without proof. You look at other papers in the
field, and you see what facts they quote without proof, and what they cite in
their bibliography. You learn from other people some idea of the proofs. Then
you're free to quote the same theorem and cite the same citations. You don't
necessarily have to read the full papers or books that are in your bibliography.
Many of the things that are generally known are things for which there may be
no known written source. As long as people in the field are comfortable that
the idea works, it doesn't need to have a formal written source. At first I was highly suspicious of this process. I would doubt whether a certain idea was really established. But I found that I could ask people, and they
could produce explanations and proofs, or else refer me to other people or to
written sources that would give explanations and proofs. There were published
theorems that were generally known to be false, or where the proofs were generally known to be incomplete. Mathematical knowledge and understanding were
embedded in the minds and in the social fabric of the community of people
thinking about a particular topic. This knowledge was supported by written
documents, but the written documents were not really primary.

"The crisis of AI-generated mathematics", by Max Weinreich arxiv.org/abs/2608.02859
The end of reading mathematics

Even before AI entered the conversation, mathematical knowledge was being produced at a faster rate than it could be profitably absorbed. Many good papers have never been cited, and journal editors struggle to find even a single referee, even for great work. This problem is about to get much worse. Autonomously produced papers will break the journal system.

Tao has argued on social media that “some of the prestige previously awarded to being the first to generate a proof will need to be transferred instead to the humans who successfully verify and digest such proofs” [19]. But checking a flood of AI-generated papers for correctness doesn’t sound prestigious. It sounds boring. AI can generate artificial papers by the thousands. How many of them would you agree to referee? It seems more likely that corporations will offer the same solution as they did for proof generation: refereeing duties can also be taken over by machines. It’s only a small step from the increasingly common practice of using AI to scan a manuscript for mistakes.

Two of the most exciting results, the experts say, incorporate preexisting ideas from the recent mathematical literature without properly citing them. This contradicts OpenAI’s initial press release, which said that the problems Astra addressed “have been open and seen no progress on the main result for at least a decade.” (OpenAI has since updated the language to be more accurate).

“They are running roughshod over the work of others who came before them in a deliberate way,” says Stephen Miller, a mathematician at Yeshiva University, who argues that OpenAI has effectively plagiarized his own research. “It seems completely systematic to me, and it points to research misconduct.”
