Ballpoint pen and colored pencil.

At the top of the piece we see the delicately drawn branches and leaves of an apple tree. Just beneath the tree limbs, a bat is flying with one of the green apples in its mouth. This is when the morphing begins, reader. A sequence of 13 drawings show the bat morphing into a teeny witch (with completion of the morph around drawing #9). The morphing creates a spiral leading us to the center of the page where the little witch is running towards her basket filled with apples. It’s likely she’ll re-morph into a bat again and the morphing pattern will continue.

Pencil on paper. A man in a sweater leans out of his apartment window with his hand on his heart and yells out for everyone to hear, “There’s music in my heart again.” A woman leans out from her window a floor below him and says, “Sing us a song, sweater boy.” Artist’s note: I was emerging from a long stretch of moodiness when I made this one. For a moment, I was sweater boy.

A man is vacuuming while trying to make conversation with someone in another room. He is thrilled with the turning radius of the machine. A voice from the other room yells, “What?” The vacuuming man yells back, “I said this puppy’s got serious turning radius.” It’s likely he’ll continue to repeat himself over the sound of the vacuum Artist’s note: I’m always aiming for bold and sloppy line work. We achieved that here.

the cover for BETWEEN THE BLOOD AND THE SUN: a female figure, face shadowed, the sun rising or setting behind her. She's wearing a smallish cowboy hat (i.e. not ten gallon), and has two guns.

with cover blurb: "Hazel Smith rides west on a mare she won at a poker table.

When she reaches the town of Silence, she finds a tiny but welcoming community bookended by a church and a saloon. A good place to die. But the saloon has no mirror behind the bar, and nobody but the priest himself goes to the church. The only horse in the only stable is hers.

In her final hours, Hazel has to make a choice between living forever and making her death matter."

Two panel comic. Panel 1: an anglerfish is washed up on the ocean shore, laying in the tide. It thinks to itself, “it’s so beautiful.” Panel 2: wide shot of the beach, rocky cliffs, and sky at sunset, with the anglerfish still laying in place. The anglerfish continues thinking to itself, “I might have never known.”
