Honored to make a cameo in @alisonleiby.bsky.social’s newsletter where she reveals my recently adopted catch phrase! Read it all: comfortread.substack.com/p/i-dont-wan...
I say this to Josh all the time. “What are we supposed to want?” We have a few phrases we toss back and forth when we take writing breaks to complain about the industry and the world at large. Josh will fire back with a, “Things cost money!” in response to literally any piece of news about a shrinking budget or room or episode order. We both regularly wonder, “Why is it so hard for regular people to have nice things?” We’re also known to say things like, “Yeah I could do one more” and “I don’t care if I live or die.”

It is ominous, but also remember that big promises of special things that are about to happen have been a cornerstone of the decade-long prosperity scam Trump has been running. It's how QAnon works. You promise big, deliver nothing, and keep the marks on the hook for the next promise.

I wish Emily Bazelon had read @lilymasonphd.bsky.social's recent article, "Polarization is not the Problem" (link later in thread). The polarization framework distracts from the fundamental issue of GOP extremism.
The main reason a new voting rights bill failed to pass is the same reason Congress has stopped responding to the court: partisan polarization, which ramped up in the 2000s. As conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans went extinct, bipartisan overrides ended. When one party is in control and can reject a court ruling on its own, the filibuster remains a barrier to such a bill passing.

brings me no joy to say that Fukuyama nailed it
But supposing that the world has become "filled up," so to speak, with liberal democracies, such that there exist no tyranny and oppression worthy of the name against which to struggle?
Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier gen-eration, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and pros-perity, and against democracy.

How many 50-year-old roofers there are? Zero. One reason unions fight for high wages is because careers are SHORT.

A key component of the Cambridge Analytica outrage was your friends subjecting you to data theft without your consent or knowledge. Facebook is running the same playbook on your text messages. Even if you’re not on Meta properties, they’re ingesting your interactions.
Aten installed Muse on both his iPhone and a Mac mini that he uses to test out various Al agents and tech. It took Meta a single day to begin "helpfully" pitching article ideas based on texts he'd sent to a podcast co-host.
When he asked Muse how it got the information, it said that it read banners from incoming texts. But that's not true, either.
After doing a little digging, Aten says Muse synced 187,000 lines from his Messages database, despite Full Disk Access being Off.Unless Aten is the most popular person on the face of the planet, I sincerely doubt he'd gotten 187,000 lines of text in roughly 24 hours. What happened is that, without permission, Muse went into the app and downloaded the information.
He had not given Muse permission to access Messages, and full disk access was not enabled. It just went ahead and uploaded those texts anyway.
Muse can take "unexpected actions" indeed.
