I should also say I’ve had tons of interesting offline conversations with people who work there, but obviously they’re selective about who speaks out publicly.

One of their reporters used to “nutpick” the worst critics he could find on Threads and couldn’t come up with a direct response when I asked him if there were any good faith criticisms he thought were worth responding to. It’s this weird denial of power when they clearly have lots of power.

Also a consistent pattern with bad faith arguments: Do you know this policy has TRADEOFFS? Yeah, man, it’s a policy. Do you know of one that doesn’t?

My old Congressman used to say everyone wants more benefits and fewer taxes, but I think it’s deeper than that: millions of people want the benefits of living in society with none of the social obligations.

No one who works in management at the NYT for years can internalize the criticism — it’s self-selecting.

Michael Brooks (RIP) called these minor media figures the “dumb dum left” and it’s worth differentiating people who exclusively produce podcast criticism from people who actively engage with unions, advocacy groups, electoral campaigns, etc.

Relatedly, I think the "permanent Democratic majority" stuff was always offbase because your opponent doesn't sit there and say "oh well, guess we lost based on demographic change forever!" If we're tied to thermostatic elections, the goal is getting the other party to move your way to win.

One of my pet peeves is when there's a story about a group's plans to raise $100 million or whatever. These plans, as these tweets from teddyschleifer.bsky.social show, don't always amount to much, especially when they're reliant on a few big donors who may get cold feet and fail to follow through.

Part of a much broader court packing argument is that it would advance elections being referenda on actual party positions as opposed to someone like Collins trying to campaign having it both ways.

One good counterargument against escalation that stood for a while is that Rs would go ham and do crazy stuff like overturn Roe. Obviously they got there anyway. If the parties took turns court packing it would be much harder for R candidates to obscure their actual position on abortion.

It’s easy to do the right thing when it doesn’t cost you anything. It’s harder to do the right thing in cases like this, where it will cost Sally Rooney quite a lot. A really uncommon display of principle. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Probably a bad thing that the right can come up with a totally nonsense conspiracy theory about James Talarico and journalists have to spend valuable time 3 weeks before the election debunking it instead of covering Paxton actually going to Dubai with his mistress on a trip paid for by a criminal

And of course someone beans Digger with a shoe, presumably a reference to the shoe Bush dodged (what if it hit!) but I think this is also meant to be interpreted as largely symbolic and therefore ineffective at stopping the fossil fuel industry.

At the parliamentary hall, Digger and Ganesh are rather nonchalant about the protestors outside accusing Digger of genocide and launching molotovs at them. And at the very end, in the NYC street scene, we see anti-oil graffiti on the walls. There IS a resistance movement, but its outside the film.

Two things I'd add that I think you and @mollytaft.com might appreciate: Don't Look Up briefly depicts a sit-in / strike at a legislative hall, IIRC, but otherwise depicts direct action for laughs. Digger has two key scenes that point to more direct action, which none of the characters engage w/

The parliamentarians with their heads pressed against too-low-ceilings seemed to symbolize the limits of their own power as does their bland clothing and use of recording devices. The one parliamentarian who throws a shoe and the molotov-chuckers outside point to a different theory of power!

To be fair, the Digger speech in the film is 10x more coherent than Billy Bob Thornton in Landman blowing everyone's minds by revealing that wind turbines use oil to lubricate moving parts.

Darkly funny to see guys on Reddit criticizing Digger's "message" by uncritically repeating some version of the everyone-uses-fossil-fuels argument the main character uses *in the movie*.

Chatted about the weird ending to the Commanders / Giants game with a stranger while grabbing lunch and it’s remarkable how quickly one can reasonably leap to thinking it’s a gambling fix. Really corrupting for fans.

Yeah, this is directed at political leaders who have explicit responsibility to the Constitution. I still think back often to Khizr Khan busting out his pocket copy at the 2016 DNC convention -- the law applying to everyone equally is the unfulfilled promise we're all supposed to be striving toward.

Interesting thought exercise from Thich Nhat Hanh (Buddhist monk and peace activist): If there's no "I" then you and your inner child and whoever hurt you have no distance. So your inner child is still with "you" and can see your adult freedom and acceptance through their eyes.
