I did gently mention that we helped get non-discrimination ordinances passed (particularly in Portland) in my letter to them - I imagine it helped. Sending my repeated thanks to city council, especially @councilortkl.bsky.social. She and @councilormorillo.bsky.social need to be re-elected in D3!

I’m very used to having to fight the good fight, so I’m really pleased when people do the right thing. I wrote to them and they got back to me quickly - the three of us will be covered under the same air ambulance membership as a family sharing a household. Thank goodness. 🚁😅❤️❤️❤️🎉

Also, WTH is “legal disability?” ADA is different from SSI; both are different from disability for tax or benefit purposes. My doctors gave me a disabled parking placard and recommended a service dog placement for my disability… is that “legal” enough for them? What about other kinds of disability?

They sent a letter that said that we “may not meet their eligibility policies.” What it FELT like was, “we aren’t sure you’re actually a family.” And that is a punch to the gut every time it happens, in any context - but when it’s about who gets a ride to a hospital… it’s especially cold.

They cover Oregon and Washington among others - states with several cities that have passed nondiscrimination ordinances for families like ours. And this is a membership - they explicitly say they aren’t insurance. This kind of thing is why we testified for Portland’s nondiscrimination ordinance.

We wonder which facts and arguments to pull out first. Maybe they’ll be kind and will fix their policies immediately. I doubt it. We may end up paying for two household memberships anyway - it’s to help cover air ambulance care and it matters! But we may have to keep pushing on this on principle.

So… we have a three-person registered domestic partnership in Somerville, MA (and one of them is also my legal spouse). I have a disability. We all share ownership of our home, our homeowners/car insurance policies, and have shared estate planning and medical power of attorney. We ARE family!

Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 15h
There is a membership service that advertises coverage for the “entire family/whole household” - which they define as a primary member, their spouse or domestic partner, and anyone living with them with a legal disability or younger than 24 or older than 65. They are questioning our eligibility.

No cheating. Share the last photo of the sky from your camera roll.

That the queer young person is seeking something? Validation, attention, acceptance? Sure. The stuff all young people crave. I want queer kids to feel basic safety and acceptance. Even if I don’t understand the whole list.

Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I understand your intent is good. But it still encourages people to comment on the number as remarkable. Or strange. Or an awfully long list. I’m just saying that the kid doesn’t need to be remarked on.
100
Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Why is the number a problem? I see a kid who is trying awfully hard for one of those things to matter to someone. It may come across as very self-focused… probably because kids are figuring themselves out. With maturity, I bet the list narrows.

Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Yes, it’s a lot. From a queer kid trying to define themselves. Probably in response to being minimized or hurt by people around them. And the video (and you) have a response that focuses on that number of identifiers as ridiculous.

Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Sir… punch up. No young person should be teased about their identity or why it doesn’t matter. It’s unkind and can cause real harm.

In case we need an even more dystopian landscape, let’s add noisy drones that disturb everyone all day, every day, to serve capitalist greed and people’s need for instant gratification, that also have the potential to harm or kill already threatened birds and wildlife. 😞

Drazan says schools need to prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs rather than the next generation of activists. Let’s make sure that success is defined as caring about people, not just caring about money. And kids learn better when they know they are safe and that it’s okay to be themselves.

Mark would totally do this. He’d get the throwing knives, fancy handkerchiefs, and probably a Hello Kitty Fanny pack to keep them all in. Dave is more trustworthy at yard sales, but would be tempted if there are any telescope optics or boxes of free kittens.

Been back in Portland a while… and it’s back to family conversations like, “did you also get awakened by the three big explosion sounds in the middle of the night?” Yep. I love you, Portland, but why are you like this every night?

Nobody needs to prove their intelligence to be valuable as a person. 🙄 But yes, we are constantly having to get straight white males to stop being assholes. Agreed on that point.

Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I’m also seeing a lot of comments about “why do we even have to name all of these groups specifically?” Because assholes will take advantage of the fact that your type of relationship or family is not specifically named and claim that “everyone knows that you aren’t valid.” Ask me how I know. 🤨

Glad to see the plan for polyamorous world domination is succeeding! 😂 (On a more serious note, this triad of almost 2 decades is grateful and gratified to see nondiscrimination ordinances passing in more and more places! Also glad that Portland beat Seattle… 😂) ❤️❤️❤️ www.knkx.org/law/2026-09-...

He of course got plenty of treats and praise and was very proud of himself. 😄 While I could have carried that package easily myself, his ability to pick up and carry items is so useful to me at other times that it’s worth practicing even when I don’t need it in that moment. 💕 And he enjoys it! 😊

Sprocket’s most helpful service dog tasks are medical alert and retrieval - letting me know when my body isn’t right, and getting meds, water, phone, or other people when needed. He also loves working - and carried a package home for a quarter mile yesterday just because. Here’s the doorbell cam. 💕🐕‍🦺

There is no place with perfect compliance, but Portland people are especially bad about ignoring leash laws. A lot of population density, a lot of dogs, and a lot of toxic individualism. Almost everywhere else I’ve been has been better.

I understand. I just think that part of being a good dog owner is leashing your dog in public even if your dog is well-trained enough to be off-leash. It sets an example for others and contributes to a safe environment for everyone. Off-leash in designated areas is fine. Everywhere else is not okay.

Amy N-K @aankphd.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The trouble with that is that everyone who lets their dog off leash believes they are competent owners of a harmless dog. Very rarely do I find that these dog owners are as competent as they believe themselves to be, and screaming “he’s friendly!!” as a dog barrels towards you is not reassuring.
