Love this quote: “I have really always thought of science fiction - from Margaret Cavendish and Mary Shelley onwards, through Ursula Le Guin, Octavia Butler, and, of course, Margaret Atwood - as a women’s genre. It is a way of talking about the world as it could be, not as it is.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

Sometimes society at large rejects certain ideas because they’ve been thoroughly shown to be wrong and also because they suck and the people who espouse them suck and when someone comes around arguing those ideas should be part of some edgy modern debate we can and should shun them and move on.

No employer needs to tolerate an employee systematically spreading dehumanising hate ideologies. There is no protection for such behaviour, neither within academic freedom nor within freedom of speech. It is quite irrelevant whether the employer is a university or any other public or private body.

I wouldn't call myself a cartoonist, but I had the vision and just needed it to be on paper to the best of my ability.
A hand drawn eight panel cartoon. First two panels are a colander sitting frowning on a shelf. Then the colander is frowning straining pasta, then three more panels of frowning sitting on a shelf. Then a big panel where it's projecting a bunch of crescent eclipse shapes and smiling with speech bubbles around saying "Wow! Look! Amazing! Beautiful!" And then one final panel where it's sitting on a shelf smiling.

Image: In a childrens library, a small boy contentedly reads a small picture book, while an angry-looking small girl storms past, carrying a very heavy book.

Caption:
Unfortunately for Charlotte, the adjudication committee decides that, for the purposes of the under-nines summer reading challenge, the six volumes of proust's 'in search of lost time' is considered to be one single narrative, whereas each of Roger hargreaves' mister men' books is a distinct work, thereby awarding the library's 'top reader' sticker to her brother Toby.

yiddish has a verb (shmits, שמיצן) which means “to hit” but when it’s reflexive means “to be angry,” and so to ask why someone is mad in yiddish you can literally just ask “why are you hitting yourself”

LambdaG: A simplified approach to Authorship Verification
In our latest research, led by Sadie Barlow and with Dr Edoardo Manino, we discovered a very important property of LambdaG: it does not require a calibration dataset to produce well calibrated likelihood ratios. A simple correction is sufficient. This means that the analysis is significantly simpler to implement and explain. LambdaG is therefore also the only existing authorship verification method that does not require a calibration analysis to produce likelihood ratios. The paper, currently under review, is available on arXiv here:

While it may seem obvious that writers of prose don't make use of rhymes and meter like poets do, it turns out Dutch prosaists actually seem to *avoid* meter in their sentences. At least iambic pentameter and hexameter (alexandrine) occur less frequently than expected by chance. Interesting!

Einschränkungen der Rechte bei Krankheit, Armut oder Arbeitslosigkeit zeigen, dass der Staat den Bürger*innen misstraut. Einschränkungen der Informationsfreiheit sorgen dafür, dass Bürger*innen dem Staat misstrauen. So erodiert aus zwei Richtungen die Bindung zwischen Institutionen und Bevölkerung.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the standalone edition of The Word for World is Forest. This Berkley Medallion edition is from December 1976. Cover art by Richard Powers.
The cover for the 1976 edition of The Word for World is Forest is all shades of green: The author's name is across the top in white, under which smaller text says "author of The Left Hand of Darkness." The book title is a vivid yellow, and under that text says "the mind-stunning science fiction masterpiece." The illustration shows a female fiture with long hair, nude, behind a lot of waving green growths that emanate from a round planet-like shape at the lower right. There are bits of red and yellow mixed in, giving the whole thing a cellular vibe. In the foreground, at the bottom, are green figures, not quite human-like.
