Speaking in literary historian: This is what we see in periods of artistic efflorescence. Yes, there are sui generis artists who thrive regardless of discourse community. But groups of artists & innovative movements rely on venues for discussion, argument, manifestos, denunciations, celebrations!

There's plenty of early reader *crap* out there - most early readers make my brain feel like it's going to dribble out of my ears - but surprisingly few high-quality series. My kids would love more like Mercy Watson or the Princess in Black! I'd love to buy them for them! If I could find them!

This thread is spot on. I'd add that there's also room in the market at the early reader age, between picture books and elementary-level chapter books. There are some good series - Charlie & Mouse, Cornbread & Poppy, Mr. Putter & Tabby, the classic Frog & Toad - but not nearly enough to meet demand.

If we're doing genre/literary discourse, my hot take is genres are loose traditions that are best understand historically and culturally and attempts to define them logically ("if it has X and Y, then it is by definition Z") always fall short. countercraft.substack.com/p/genres-are...

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

Innocence/Primitivism: the first flush of the genre coalescing, when ideas must be worked in laborious detail; Plausible/Realism is the mature genre, when tropes and motifs and moves are recognizable (and thus contestable); Decadence is when you can conjure the genre with a gesture—and art can play.

I'm gonna reach for Russ, again, on the Wearing Out of Genre Materials: www.jstor.org/stable/375521
I would like to suggest that there is a way out of this dilemma, that writers take it, and that their taking it accounts for the phenomenon of genre material wearing out (maybe all fictional narrative eventually wearing out). Not only that, the way out of the dilemma accounts for the way scenes or plots do in fact wear out; that is, not all at once but in three distinct stages. I have named these Innocence, Plausibility, and Decadence; they might just as well be called Primitivism, Realism, and Decadence (though "Realism" here has nothing to do with realism as a style or historical period).

Issue 3: Ekphrasis
Between October 17 and November 17, guest editor Zachary Gillan will accept submissions of weird flash fiction that features ekphrasis.
Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art.
Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it.
We want stories that live at the intersection of the two. Pieces that emphasize the eerie power of weird art, whether fully ekphrastic or embedded within a traditional narrative. How does the weird seep in as reality is doubly estranged from these two layers of representation? Cursed paintings, uncanny statues, haunted mezzotints-send us your stories of weird art.

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

Publishers and Editors! I'm taking subs for Vol. 3 of the award-nominated "Best Weird Fiction of the Year" til end of the year. Writers! You'll get a chance to submit your 2026 stories in January. bestspecfic(at)gmail.com

Esteemed Editors and Publishers,

I am now taking submissions of original 2026 short fiction projects — magazines, anthologies, single-author collections — for consideration in The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 3. (Publishing Sept. 2027). Vol. 1 is a World fantasy Award Finalist.

I am seeking material first published this year, in 2026. To be clear, only weird fiction FIRST published in 2026 is eligible for inclusion in this volume. I will accept translated work as long as the first English-language publication was 2026.

Stories should be between 500 and 17,499 words. Audio only stories are also ineligible, unless they also appeared as text.

Publishers and editors are encouraged to send electronic or digital copies, via the email address below. (I am not accepting hard copy submissions.) ePubs are preferred, but I will also accept text files (Word), Mobi, or PDF. Please do not cherry-pick selections. Send the entire book, journal, or magazine to:

bestspecfic@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and kind consideration.

Warm Wishes,

Michael
