it’s just annoying bc i told them how much i needed to get rid of it and to tell me if they can no longer come but they said for sure they cab, then changed the time on me three times, then i told them I’ll just leave it outside, then four hours after they said they’d pick it up it’s still there

the vastness of a country or doesn’t necessarily factor into intracity public transportation. tokyo is like 1000 sq. mi. larger than los angeles and you can definitely guess which one has better public transportation. it’s not about physical geography, it’s policy, and policy can be changed.

One thing that might or might not be obvious is that making one block "pedestrian only" reduces car traffic over a much larger area. I'm staying in the same neighborhood where I lived a few years ago, and the decrease in motor vehicle traffic is astounding.

Every time I return to Paris, I notice they've done more to reclaim streets from drivers and cars, including removing on-street parking, protecting cyclists from drivers, and prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists in shared spaces. Other cities can learn a lot from Paris.

more sustainable than analog bikes but as the article actually says “Among active transport options, traditional bicycles emerge as having the lowest GHG emissions compared to walking, electric scooter, and electric bicycles, primarily due to the absence of a battery and limited material emissions.”

“radlib” @a.aboli.sh · 27/09/2026
the graphic i think basically averaged out the e-bikes (which do slightly have higher emissions than traditional bikes when calculating dietary intake) with the e-scooters (which has a significantly lower caloric need than both e-bikes and traditional bikes) and that’s why it looks like e-bikes are

(or 189 g CO2 if the four calories are from beef)

“radlib” @a.aboli.sh · 27/09/2026
(in miles that’s 419, 56, 165, 96 g CO2/mi respectively)
100
“radlib” @a.aboli.sh · 27/09/2026
the figures beside the g CO2 for each transportation mode are the average ridership, so even though (gasoline) bus emits 262 g CO2/km, it’s actually 35 g CO2/km/passenger because the avg ridership is 7.5, compared to 103 g CO2/1.7 avg ridership = 60 g CO2/km/passenger in a private (electric) vehicle

the dietary intake ratio parameter (table 2 page 6) between e-bike and analog bike is 5.8:6.7 which means that acc. to their calculations, if you spend 30 calories using a regular bike per mile, you would only spend 26 calories on an e-bike. that‘s one gram of sugar less per mile, or 0.47 g CO2/mi

anyway I found the paper on which the write up says this data is based and from a quick skim it doesn’t reflect the figure in the graphic at all??? www.nature.com/articles/s43...
Boxplot of average GHG emissions in grams of CO2eq per passenger kilometre travelled for different modes of transportation, with delineations between emissions coming from battery, materials, fuel, direct operation, and dietary.
Bus: 262 g CO2
Gas vehicle: 202 g CO2
Hybrid EV: 152 g CO2
E scooter: 115 g CO2
EV: 103 g CO2
Rail: 96 g CO2
Walk: 76 g CO2
E bike: 42 g CO2
Traditional bike: 29 g CO2

I am mostly just curious how they got the 33g figure 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure it’s possible, but afaik it‘s unscientific unless others are able to produce that figure w the same methodology, and if we can’t, we should question data that seems questionable even if it says “source: credible source”
110
“radlib” @a.aboli.sh · 27/09/2026
but maybe we split the 87 calories according to a standard macronutrient distribution. 50% carbs, 30% fats, 20% protein. that’s 5g CO2 from sugar, 829g CO2 from beef. i‘m not even going to bother counting the fats because the sum of + 834g CO2 again doesn’t come close to the 33g fig in the graphic.
100
“radlib” @a.aboli.sh · 27/09/2026
(beef emissions from poore & nemecek, 2018) plus the 8g we’re using as no-cal benchmark from the graphic’s e-bike calculations (although probs less bc less materials req. for analog bike) = 4,153 g CO2 per mile, which is more than any other mode of transportation on the graphic!
100
“radlib” @a.aboli.sh · 27/09/2026
but sure, let’s say beef is the main caloric source to bike those 10 mi. total emissions for each kg beef (~2100 calories) is 99.48kg CO2. 87 cal/mile div by 2100 cal/kg will give how much beef to power a mile = 41.4g. the emissions of those 41.4g of beef = 4,145 grams of CO2 per mile

using the linked calc, a 180lb person travelling 10 mi w/ 1000 ft of elevation gain at, e.g., 15mph would burn ~871 calories on that ride, so 87 cal/mile. that’s 22g of carbs which, if we’re again using sugar to stand in for carbs, that’s still only 10g CO2/mile calculator.academy/mountain-bik...
