Canadian federalism is the provinces blaming Ottawa for things the provinces are responsible for and trusting that the voters won't know that

Privatizing the 407 was one of the best decisions in Ontario history. If left public, a premier like Doug Ford would have removed tolls on it, subsidizing car travel even more and having it get just as congested as the 401. I'd rather drivers pay for their use of roads.

TIL that Mohamed Atta was a professional urban planner, of the preservationist nimby persuasion, and that his graduate school thesis was about how high-rises ruin neighborhood character 😳.
Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta that reads, “ At the Hamburg University of Technology, Atta studied under the guidance of the department chair, Dittmar Machule, who specialized in the Middle East. 19] Atta was averse to modern development. This included the construction of high-rise buildings in Cairo and other ancient cities in the region. He believed that the drab and impersonal apartment blocks, built in the 60s and 70s, ruined the beauty of old neighborhoods and robbed their people of privacy and dignity.”Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta, with a highlighted sentence that reads “He criticized how the newfangled skyscrapers and other modernizing projects disrupted the fabric of communities.”

Perks oversaw the depopulation and gentrification of much of his ward, including displacement of many low-income people, as the city did nothing to protect tenants in small apartments and rooming houses. He spent much energy defending the planning policies that enabled these regressive changes.

Ontario and Toronto should be making the relevant regulatory changes to legalize these ASAP. Abundant Waymos were the best part of living in SF. They’re so much safer to walk/bike/drive around than the avg car.

Ok first up: importance. What do I mean by this? It means the candidates I'm backing would have to meaningfully change something I care about at council. The larger the swing in outcome, the more important it is. Spending money on a race between similar candidates is not important (to me). 11/

I guess it's a hot take but I'll defend the 407. If it were public, political pressure would have removed the tolls, socialized the costs and it would be crowded enough that there would be pressure to expand it. You can argue about how much they sold it for, but it was the right idea.

My hot take is that this was one of the best decisions ever made by an Ontario government in recent memory. If it wasn't sold off, Doug Ford would have just removed tolls from it, continuing to subsidize driving and sprawl.

Why did CBC added this very odd non-sequitur to the end of the “She’s Running” article? www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Article excerpt: So far 15 other candidates are also vying for a chance to be Toronto's mayor this year, according to the city's website.
Amongst them, Ward 19 Coun. Brad Bradford is expected to be Chow's biggest competition for votes. Political advocacy groups have run multiple ads targeting both individuals since mid-April.
Chow was born in Hong Kong and moved to Toronto at age 13.
Toronto's municipal election is set for Oct.

I am particularly annoyed by Toronto's response on minimum lot size. They say they don't want minimum lot size reform because it could limit the construction of multiplexes. This totally ignores that multiplexes have been far more likely to be built in areas that don't have *any* minimum lot size.

The streetcars are going so slow in part because of antiquated technology Toronto still uses. Modern switch control would fix many intersection slow downs. Dual blade switches would bring the network in line with the light rail lines and even some streetcar yards.

It's also a negative cycle. We'll be told more support is needed in the suburbs at a time those councillors indicated they'll ignore us. Anyway, look at the surveys, letters, in-person consultation attendees and deputations. Suburban ward housing advocates showed up; the mayor didn't show up for us.

Perks isn't voting yes with strong mayor powers. A bigger issue for me is multiple councillors (Carroll, Fletcher) used questions and speeches to state that residents associations were saying no, dismissing those saying yes as just from downtown. And the mayor said nothing to correct that.

Canadian cities need way more hotels. Prices are very high, which not only prevents people from traveling domestically which is terrible, but drags on the tourist economy and on the housing market!
