Stumbled across this: The root of "female" has nothing to do with "male". It derives from the Mediaeval Latin femella, a diminutive of femina, a woman. It was mistakenly transcribed in Middle English as "female", perhaps creating the impression that a woman is a version/variant/ subset of a man.

I’m in the Drawing Room in Blue Prince, which overlooks the west side in this particular run. I have forty-two steps and three keys, but not much else. A sketch portrait of (presumably) the mansion’s owner, Herbert Sinclair, rests on an easel in front of me. Nothing else in the room is remarkable save for the window to the outside, a few chairs and tables, and a former fireplace with a clock resting on the mantlepiece.

There are three books standing upright on my desk, from left to right: More Everything Forever by Adam Becker, Free Ride by Noraly Schoenmaker, and The Perfect Game by Henk Rogers. While Becker’s book is merely the text launching itself into outer space, Schoenmaker herself stands next to her Royal Enfield, Basanti, in the middle of a dirt path road through a mountain range (possibly the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan based on the back cover, but don’t go by me), and Tetris blocks fall behind the face of Henk Rogers. Side note: Rogers’s book cover is also lenticular.
