dc statehood is non-negotiable after trump's actions in his second term. republicans despise the people of the city that hosts them, and there is little reason to think that, now that the seal is broken on treating them as an occupied population, a next republican president will be more restrained

What is possible is structured by the political environment, and although Democrats can shape that environment, it is not infinitely malleable, and that should be taken seriously as well.

Given that there is not likely to be a national, bipartisan demand for accountability in the wake of Trump — the major distinction with Nixon — any accountability, civil or criminal, will be a partisan and political project that I think should be pursued as vigorously as possible.

The purpose of the question was to begin to make an observation about how the Nixon circumstance is different enough to not be a useful parallel as well as to note that *Democrats* were not principally responsible for the lack of criminal accountability.

I am genuinely struck by your absolute confidence that you can divine a stranger's thoughts based off of nothing but a single, unadorned question and your total lack of curiosity about what I was responding to or why I thought the question was relevant.

Wrong again. I asked you a simple question. Your sense of how I was "acting" is entirely your invention, based on your suppositions.

No, and nothing I said suggested that. You should try to reply to the things people say, rather than the things you imagine they think.

It does not downplay one form of lynching to identify another form. It is helpful to remember that many categories include multiple types.

jamelle @jamellebouie.net · 09/10/2026
“Lynching” in the US is not a singular phenomenon. The lynching you are describing is a “racial terror” lynching. There were “public spectacle lynchings,” which have elements of the former but are not identical. There are also “legal lynchings” which were the summary use of capital punishment.
