A large-scale fire has broken out in the sea off the coast of Sochi, likely involving an oil tanker. Preliminary reports suggest the vessel may have caught fire following an attack by a naval drone or a UAV.

It is just an everyday thing in Britain for nasty fash conspiracy theory cranks to wild out in public, without that raising an eyebrow, and lots of them are MPs.

Face-coverings for Muslim women are the equivalent of a "ball and chain", the Tory shadow justice secretary has said.
Nick Timothy said he hated the niqab and burqa - and their use was "harmful" to wider society.
Asked about his view on them, he told a Spectator fringe: "We are an open society, and we should want people to be able to make their own choices."
Timothy continued: "I hate the niqab and the burqa. I've said before, when I see a woman wearing that, I see a human being with a ball and chain around her ankle.
"It is a deliberate choice to cut women off from society, and I think the harm caused by that is not just to the women involved -- considerable as that may be.

It’s the old argument against pornography: You can choose to not consume ten years of escalating wingnut hate, screaming accusations, moronic McCarthyist propaganda and idiotic fraud, but you cannot choose to live in a version of Britain where your leadership class did not do that. They did.

This can’t be done, any more than we can now manage the country without constant roaring shit-up-the-walls all-media panics and hate campaigns. We can never take a few years’ break from Normal, where important people run riot screaming like crazed wingnut cranks. Normal is a thing we make every day.

Tim Stanley deserves credit for continuing to try and make Conservatism sane again.
We've recently heard similar sane-ish moments from Rees-Mogg, Hannan and even Allister Heath, but they are not (yet?) as consistent as Tim Stanley who seems to be growing into this role.

Voters loathed the Tory party when they booted them out in 2024.They really needed to shake off their disgrace with humility and better ideas. They haven’t. They’ve doubled down. More Brexit, more austerity, more anti-immigration ugliness, more tedious arrogance… and no good reason to vote for them.
Party seems to have learnt nothing from 2024 defeat
John Oxley

The Conservative Party is keen to show it is now ready to return to government, two and a half years after a
historic defeat.Their self-soothing explanation posits that defeat came from not being able to do what they wanted

No such pivot is happening at the current conference. The Tories have come to Birmingham calling for a return to orthodoxy, with similar lines about cutting benefits and regulation. Even so, they seem trapped by the same contradictions
- pledging to cut benefits, but not the winter fuel payments and triple lock on pensions that go to their voters.
There is no "hug-a-hoodie" moment in Birmingham. The Conservative Party is not indicating that it has changed or seeking to broaden its appeal. It is doing the opposite: it is a party returning to its core, restating all the old ideas voters have rejected but louder.
