The story behind Orange Shirt Day

Orange shirt day was created by Phillish Webstad of Stswecemʼc Xgetʼtem First Nation. "I went to Mission for one school year in 1973/74. I had just turned 6 years old. I lived with my grandmother on the Dog Creek reserve. We never had very much money, but somehow my granny managed to buy me a new outfit to go to Mission school. I remember going to Robinson's store and picking out a shiny orange shirt. It had string laced up in front, and was so bright and exiting - just like I felt to be going to school! When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again. I didn't understand why they wouldn't give it back to me, it was mine! The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn't matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared"

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) With a lifespan of up to 40 years, Turkey Vultures mate for life. The scientific name "Cathartes aura" translates from Greek to "cleansing breeze". Their stomach acid has a lower pH than battery acid, allowing them to eat carcasses tainted with anthrax and rabies.

As anyone in publishing will tell you, women do not resist reading books by men, but men will often dismiss books by women. This is not a publishing problem or a failure to target men. It's a misogyny problem.

Tecumseh “So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life."

Alt-text: A 7.5 foot tall bronze sculpture of Tecumseh in Walpole Island, unveiled in October 2015, by artist Toulouse Bebamikawe (1963-2026). Tecumseh is dressed in buckskin attire, holding a tomahawk in his right hand and a spear in his left hand.

Tecumseh (Shooting Star / Panther Crouching in Wait) (c.1768-1813)

Tecumseh was the Great Leader of the Confederacy of Nations, a war chief, a statesman and an orator, who struggled to protect the Confederacy’s sovereignty over its lands and waters. Tecumseh fought valiantly in the War of 1812 and in the Battle of the Thames. It is believed that Chief Oshawanoe retrieved Tecumseh’s remains hidden near the battlefield and placed them on St. Anne Island. Chief Joseph White, his stepson Silas Shobway, and the Walpole Island Soldiers Club cared for Tecumseh’s bones through the generations. Overlooking the lands and the waters of Bkejwanong Territory, Tecumseh’s remains were placed in this cairn on August 25 th , 1941. This final resting place was rededicated on October 2, 2013 in honour of the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Tecumseh’s spirit, his memory, and his legacy live on today.

Sharon Camille Farmer (born June 10, 1951) is a historic American photojournalist celebrated as the first African American and first woman to serve as Director of the White House Photography Office. A fun close-up color portrait of Sharon Farmer smiling warmly as she holds a large professional Canon DSLR camera equipped with a wide lens hood. Her head tilts slightly, resting close to the camera body which she cradles with both hands. A prominent silver ring with a large white oval stone is visible on her finger. She has short, voluminous greying black hair framing her face. She wears round, dark-framed glasses with textured ridges, a large dark dangling earring, and a greyish textured garment. Her wide, joyful smile projects a proud and confident mood. The background is a solid, warm brown studio backdrop. The composition places her slightly off-center, drawing direct focus to her face and the camera lens, emphasizing her historic identity as a trailblazing photographer.
