The story behind Orange Shirt Day
Orange shirt day was created by Phillish Webstad of Stswecemʼc Xgetʼtem First Nation. "I went to Mission for one school year in 1973/74. I had just turned 6 years old. I lived with my grandmother on the Dog Creek reserve. We never had very much money, but somehow my granny managed to buy me a new outfit to go to Mission school. I remember going to Robinson's store and picking out a shiny orange shirt. It had string laced up in front, and was so bright and exiting - just like I felt to be going to school! When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again. I didn't understand why they wouldn't give it back to me, it was mine! The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn't matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared"

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) With a lifespan of up to 40 years, Turkey Vultures mate for life. The scientific name "Cathartes aura" translates from Greek to "cleansing breeze". Their stomach acid has a lower pH than battery acid, allowing them to eat carcasses tainted with anthrax and rabies.

Tecumseh “So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life."
Alt-text: A 7.5 foot tall bronze sculpture of Tecumseh in Walpole Island, unveiled in October 2015, by artist Toulouse Bebamikawe (1963-2026). Tecumseh is dressed in buckskin attire, holding a tomahawk in his right hand and a spear in his left hand.Tecumseh (Shooting Star / Panther Crouching in Wait) (c.1768-1813)

Tecumseh was the Great Leader of the Confederacy of Nations, a war chief, a statesman and an orator, who struggled to protect the Confederacy’s sovereignty over its lands and waters. Tecumseh fought valiantly in the War of 1812 and in the Battle of the Thames. It is believed that Chief Oshawanoe retrieved Tecumseh’s remains hidden near the battlefield and placed them on St. Anne Island. Chief Joseph White, his stepson Silas Shobway, and the Walpole Island Soldiers Club cared for Tecumseh’s bones through the generations. Overlooking the lands and the waters of Bkejwanong Territory, Tecumseh’s remains were placed in this cairn on August 25 th , 1941. This final resting place was rededicated on October 2, 2013 in honour of the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Tecumseh’s spirit, his memory, and his legacy live on today.

Harriet Tubman - The Journey to Freedom (Wesley Woffard) This sculpture is part of The Freedom Walk 2026-- a modern retracing of the Underground Railroad's routes from Maryland to New York, and through Ontario. See alt-text for more information about the sculpture and the artist's statement.
Alt-text: A side profile of a nine-foot, 2,200 lb bronze sculpture of Harriet Tubman leading an 8-year-old girl to freedom. Photo taken at the Sandwich First Baptist Church in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Artist Statement: “In 1858, Harriet Tubman bravely returned to the slave state of Maryland to lead an 8-year-old girl to the free state of New York via the Underground Railroad network. Harriet later adopted the girl and there is speculation that she was Harriet's actual daughter or niece. I used this story as a launching point of historical reference around which I built the composition. The contours of the base are the Maryland/Delaware Peninsula where Harriet was originally enslaved and to which she frequently returned for her freedom raids. The dramatic ledge represents the Mason-Dixon line into free Pennsylvania, an important milestone in the journey to freedom.

Harriet is leaning into the wind with her shoulder; eyes cut formidably up, bracing herself against the elements. The wind illustrates the peril of the journey and serves as a metaphor for the intense opposition she faced. Harriet's dress is protectively enveloping the girl. Her skirt, billowing like a flag, signifies the legal protections afforded to every United States citizen and a symbol of the future equality to come. Each hand on the sculpture expresses an attribute: Determination, Protection, Fear, and Trust. With a look of trepidation, the child is leaning out to get a better sense of what lies ahead. She holds Harriet's finger affectionately, her cautious hope echoed in her delicate grip. The child is off-balance and tentatively taking a step forward, her foot precariously close to the edge of the cliff. The shackles are broken; they have left the bonds of slavery behind them.”
