Michelle Yeoh and I also spoke about her Rubik’s cube sports movie IT’S MY TIME, which played at TIFF. And bless her for recommending that I get a coach.

This is not the takeaway I would have from this news and we don’t have to frame him playing a contact sport while sleep deprived like this. Football’s reliance on this gamer/warrior narrative is really insidious.

While at Busan International Film Festival for Cine21, I wrote a review of Nanako Hirose’s competition film BETWEEN TWO LOVERS. It’s a pretty nice throuple dramedy that finds a few places to explore in its premise. Also, it’s pretty cool seeing my writing side-by-side in both English and Korean.

In this review I also gave a shoutout to WHO IS STILL ALIVE, which is Switzerland's Oscar submission. They're somewhat similar films in that they're based on testimonies (the latter relies on Palestinian voices) and use drawing to translate those stories. Also similar posters.

James Gray and I talked a lot about the role of the artist in relation to the effects of capitalism
To me, our economic system incentivizes cruelty to a degree that deeply upsets me. In any business negotiation, the party who cares less [about nonfinancial outcomes] holds all the leverage. That single dynamic demonstrates how brutal the system is. It chews people up and spits them out. I saw how harsh that system was on my parents. As an artist, my job isn’t to solve problems—a creative person can’t solve systemic issues, but we can point them out and transform the world’s pain into art. Corporate power has become so unassailable that people feel disconnected and alienated. When political systems and corporations fail, artists need to step into that void and speak out.

One of the last major awards bestowed upon Dolly Parton came last year when the Academy Awards presented her with an honorary Oscar: The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her philanthropy.

It's a cliche, but I really did think Dolly Parton would live forever. What a force of light, energy, and creativity, whose power will continue to reverberate with resonance of the surest strum.

Having now seen the ODYSSEY, Corey Hawkins is the high-key highlight of the supporting cast. Which isn't a surprise because he's always among the best parts of any film he's in. Hawkins is an amazingly talented actor who never gets his due flowers.

On screen, Sam Neill was that rare blend of sophisticated gentleman and raging weirdo. It’s why he so effortlessly switched between the genre, blockbuster, and indie space. While people will name quite a few of his bigger movies to watch: I’d throw a bone to SLEEPING DOGS, his breakthrough.

This is such a great Gene Siskel anecdote by John Waters 😂
And the other one, Gene Siskel, he called me once and said, “John, take me to the set of a snuff movie, I know you know where a snuff movie is.” And he was really serious, and I just started laughing.

I have so rarely identified with a character more than I do with the hapless writer at the center of Simón Mesa Soto's hilarious dark comedy A POET. Find out why on June 13 at Facets where I'll be doing a Q&A with @oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social about the film. Tickets: facets.org/programs/a-p...

Boots Riley hammering CGI in my convo with him.
I think CGI made things more technical, not amazing. I often say that you can have a sky with CGI, you could have a CGI skyscraper, stand up, walk over, and take a shit on it, and it wouldn’t be amazing. But that should be amazing. There are a lot of things we don’t know about how light works. No matter what they do, they can’t figure it out. It’s not interesting. So, I want everything to be interesting. I want to have visceral rhythms, whether it’s in the cutting or whether it’s in something happening that you don’t expect, and I’m looking to have something a little bit off, something that makes you have to pay attention.

Lucrecia Martel on the hypocrisy many judge indigenous identity with.
I think in any country that was a colony, at some point, there is this contradiction between what you learn in school and what you see in the country. I think my fascination with these topics stems from the feeling that the education I received didn’t give me the tools to understand what was really happening. I feel that there’s always a type of, I think, the liberties movement is seen between language and reality, that we use the word Indio or indigenous person, we use it to insult, and when we’re using it to insult, we’re very sure that they’re indigenous. But when those same indigenous people use it to make their claims over their land, then we’re asking, then we have doubts, then we need proof of language, and we need proof of all of this. So it’s incredible the schizophrenia that happens in a society that was part of a colony.

You could apply this meme to so many contemporary films that purport to be about something, when in reality, it's just a bundle of recognizable aesthetics and recycled bits of online chatter that solely act as a reflection.

An immense loss: Ulysses Jenkins has passed away. He was one of the great video artists. TWO ZONE-TRANSFER, for instance, is a phenomenal sublimation of the minstrel into the soulful. Many of his films were on @criterionchannl.bsky.social (I hope they're added back soon).
