I've got two shawls in progress that I'm excited about for #showMeYourKnits. * Stephen West's Dotted Rays in a gradient called "grumpyxsunshine" from Weird Sisters. * verybusymonkey's Darwin Shawl in vintage Dragonfly Fibers Dragon Sock "captain Nemo" 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of the beginning of a knitted garter stitch asymmetric crescent shaped shawl in semi-solid gray. Lines of large yarn-over style holes radiate out from the center of the shawl. The cake of yarn next to the shawl project shows that the gradient color will transition to blue, purple, pink, orange, and finally yellow. The project bag (upside down) features a quote from Jane Austen's Persuasion: "She taught me to knit, which has been a great amusement."Photo of the beginning of a knitted lace shawl made of variegated yarn in teal, blue, and emerald green. The shawl is so scrunched up on the circular needle in it that there's no discernible pattern, but that's part of the magic of lace. A project bag next to the shawl features scenes from The Lorax wherein the Onceler knits thneeds, with a trim featuring the truffula trees.

The last #fiberuaryChallenge theme "gratitude" is especially difficult today, but I am happy with my current project, the Eye Dazzler sweater. I blocked the top-down yoke on the needles and the stranding is tidy and the size is coming out as expected. Photos before and after. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a top-down stranded colorwork yoke laid flat on a gray flannel sheet on top of a yellow ruler measuring the diameter at 13 inches. The yoke is hot pink with a pattern of zig zagging lines that shift from blue to purple. The corrugated rib neckline is standing up so that the ribbing is barely visible.
Photo of the same pink and blue stranded colorwork yoke in the same position but after blocking. the diameter is now 14.25 inches and the corrugated ribbing is lying flat, the colorwork puckering is geon, and the stitches are more even.

My favorite #showMeYourKnits so far, ANIMALS! First, a pair of the Herding Cats socks from Charlotte Stone, made with a kit from the delightful Dye Mad Yarns. Notice the blocked vs. unblocked difference. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a pair of hand knit socks lying flat on the floor. The socks are pale aqua and have 6 bands of stranded colorwork cats, each in a different color and facing the opposite way. From the toe up: black cats walking left, brown cats walking right, gray cats walking left, calico cats walking right, orange cats walking left, and gray tabby cats walking right. One sock is flat and even and the stitches look uniform. The other sock (unblocked) is lumpy and the fabric puckers between the cat motifs.

#fiberuaryChallenge "looking forward": This weekend I'm looking forward to knitting with my first handspun yarn! ~170 yds of DK corriedale spun and plied on an Ashford 2.75 oz spindle that I now realize is almost comically large. Last photo shows my practice attempts. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a brilliant turquoise skein of slightly fluffy 2-ply yarn held in my left hand with a kitchen floor and door in the background. The yarn is *mostly* consistent, with some thicker and thinner spots here and there, and some over- and under-twisted spots here and there.
Photo of a large Ashford drop spindle with the same turquoise 2-ply yarn wound around it on a gray flannel sheet. This was just after I finished plying.
Photo of a shoebox plying set up shown from the top. The shoebox has two takeout chopsticks suspended in the middle of the box, stuck through holes punched in the box's long sides. On each chopstick is a cardboard toilet paper tube with brilliant turquoise singles wound around it. Plying hasn't begun, but is ready to start.
Photo of 4 mini skeins of undyed white and brown handspun wool yarn of (arguably) increasing quality. Each skein is labeled with a number 1 - 4 and the date it was spun and plied. From left to right:
#1 2024-03-02 Thick and think with many thick lumps of underspun wool.
#2 2024-03-02 - 2024-03-03 Better, but still some thick slubs.
#3 2024-03-03 Spun too tightly, with too much twist.
#4 2024-? (not visible in the tag) More consistent, somewhat thick and fluffy, but consistently so. Looks like a rustic worsted weight yarn and not a spindle malfunction.

#fiberuaryChallenge "where in the world": A favorite photo I took when I stopped to knit socks alongside the path to Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór, during a long ago trip to Ireland. Pattern is Maeva from @knitty.com, made with KnitPicks stroll. Finished the socks some months later. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of a younger me wearing sunglasses, dangly earrings, and a fox-colored tee over gray long sleeves. I'm bent over a green sock knitting project on the side of a dirt path that stretches off into the distance on a beautiful sunny day. Low stone walls stretch off to either side and a few small white houses are barely visible in the far distance before a rocky coast along blue water.
Photo of a black project bag with the toes of green toe-up two-at-a-time magic loop socks. The project sits on my lap as I'm riding on the bus from Dublin to Cork, or perhaps Cork to Galway.
Photo of the variegated green socks completed. My feet are stretched out in front of me with my toes curled up over a window ledge. The socks are k5 seed st 2 rib with a latice of traveling twisted stitches wrapping around the sides of the feet and coming to a point before the toes.

#fiberuaryChallenge "style": my style is best described as "I made this thing and it's teal or purple," but every once in a while I accidentally make something stylish, like this Marklee sweater. Yarn is MCN from Seattle Sky Dyeworks (now Wool for the People). 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Close up photo of a hand knit sweater worn by me. The sweater is sock weight yarn in pale aqua with bright aqua and gray variegation. The silhouette is drop shoulder with a mild scoop neck, a faux seam of slip stitches slanting forward to the hem from the underarm, and a split hem with a deep broken rib.

Photo of a pale gray cardigan with purple buttons and purple stranded colorwork at the yoke and above the ribbed cuffs. I'm wearing the cardigan over a navy blue tee and jeans and the cardigan takes up most of the photo.

For today's #fiberuaryChallenge theme "finished it", here's the shawl I just finished on Wednesday and wore today. Secession by Kristina Vilimaite in merino bellini yarn from Magliamania in Bern, Switzerland (2017 vacation). I'd never done beaded knitting before. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of me holding a petrol green handknit shawl in front of me over my right arm. The shawl has a garter stitch section at the top with a larger section of 3p x 1k twisted rib with the twisted knit lines ending in leaves to make a fancy border. The bases of the twisted knit lines each have 3 turquoise beads on.
Close up photo of the petrol green shawl artfully wrapped around my neck. The beads make a line around my neck suggesting a necklace and the leafy edges of the shawl are draped over my shoulders.
Photo of the entire shawl laid flat on a white table to show the asymmetric crescent shape. The left side has a single leaf at the end of each twisted knit line. The right side ends in two rows of alternating leaves. An arc across the middle of the shawl has the base of each twisted knit line with 3 turquoise beads.

The #fiberuaryChallenge "color crush" theme is so easy for me. Turquoise, teal, aqua, blue-green - I love them all. Rambouillet + silk fiber; Joni tee, Juniper Moon Farm damask; Multnomah shawl, Tosh merino light; Fairy bouquet sweater, Neighborhood Fiber Co studio sock + loft 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Close up photo of combed top fiber for spinning, in a tonal aqua and turquoise palette with some gray and darker blue mixed in. There's a lustrous sheen from the silk content.Close of photo of me wearing a cyan hand knit tee with cap sleeves. A rectangular lace panel makes a beautiful statement on the front, over a background of stockinette with purled stripes every ~1 inch.
Photo of a variegated teal and hint of brown crescent shaped shawl displayed on the edge of a couch seat. The shawl has a garter stitch base with increases down a center garter spine and an old shale pattern making a wavy lace edging.
Side on photo of me wearing a teal hand knit sweater with a shiny mohair halo. The right sleeve is in the front and center of the photo, featuring a twisted rib and wrapped stitches pattern that is meant to evoke butterflies (or fairies) flying down the sleeve.

For #fiberuaryChallenge "wear it Wednesday" and #showMeYourKnits "pinks," here's the sweater I wore today: Strokkur by Ysolda Teague. The yarn is New Lanark Wool & Textiles Aran in Heather, Natural, and Pebble, purchased when I was in Edinburgh a few years ago. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of me, a brown-haired white woman, from the chin down, standing next to an open doorway wearing a hand knit sweater over a blue collared shirt and jeans. The sweater is rose pink with an Icelandic style stranded colorwork yoke pattern with an oatmeal colored background and gray interlocking vertical loops.

Today's #fiberuaryChallenge theme is "project bag contents" so here are the items from my notions bag that I used tonight: my best needle for weaving in ends, a needle threader, Portuguese knitting pins & necklace, and scissors I shamelessly took from my mother when I moved. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
Photo of some knitting notions on top of a silver background. On the left a small tin containing a collection of tapestry and sewing needles and two needle threaders. Photo of a mocha brown alpaca with a white face and dark brown ears lying down in a barn stall. Its legs are folded up underneath just like a cat loafing and it has turned its face to the side to stare at me directly with its right eye.
Close up photo from the right side of a goat with shiny white fur and a long white beard. It's ears are mottled gray and flopped down to the sides. The right ear has a pale yellow tag through it. Two pale brown horns rise smoothly out of the goat's forehead and twist slightly to the sides. The horns are covered in silver glitter.
Side on photo of a small brown Shetland (I think) sheep facing left in a barn stall. In the background is a poster titled "Markings of Shetland sheep". Another sheep's rear end is, unfortunately, photobombing the bottom right corner.
Close up photo of a dark, dark brown sheep, breed unknown, poking its face out above the door of a barn stall. The sheep has a nearly-black face with some gray chin hairs and a small white splotch above the nose. Its brown eyes are looking directly at the camera. It has two impressive horns curling back from its head, down, and back up below the ears.

Quote this post with a knit that starts with the next letter of the alphabet for this week's #showMeYourKnits 🧶 I finished this Dappled Sunlight wrap (pattern by Jennifer Weissman) in 2024. The yarn is Dye Mad Yarns Chester Sock in the color "Lake Michigan". A fun, satisfying, and wearable pattern!
Photo of me, a white woman with fluffy brown hair, standing in front of my back yard fence and some shrubbery holding my arms outstretched to display a large blue garter knit wrap in the shape of an isosceles trapezoid. In the center is triangle defined by a wide mesh lace stripe. The edges of the short sides are also bordered by the same wide mesh lace stripe. Sunlight filters through the lacy patterns in the wrap.
Photo of me from the back displaying the blue wrap over my back and shoulders. The center mesh lace triangle contrasts with the pale gray shirt I'm wearing and the ends of the wrap ripple gracefully to either side. My hair is twisted up and held int a large claw clip.
Photo of me from the right side with the blue garter knit wrap wrapped around my shoulders. The mesh lace point is draping artfully over my right wrist. One side of the center mesh lace triangle runs across my back from my right shoulder down to my left underarm.

For today's #fiberuaryChallenge theme of "favorite place", my (non-knitting-related) favorite place to visit is the zoo. I especially love Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo, which has a history of innovation for animal enclosure design and a strong research and conservation program.
Photo of an Asian small clawed otter, water beading off of its back, clutching two small balls (one white, one blue) in its right paw while running along some rocks in water. It's not 100% in focus, but these otters move so fast I had trouble getting a great photo.Photo of a Malayan tiger striding purposefully across the grass in the back of a zoo enclosure, with a portion of black chain link fence in the background. The tiger's mouth is slightly open as if it's huffing and its ears are pointed backwards as if listening for noises from behind.
Photo of a snow leopard sitting up on its haunches in an artificial rock cave with piles of fluffy grass or straw bedding surrounding it. The leopard's tongue is out and curled upward to lick its nose.

For #WIPwednesday, here are my current on-the-go socks. My custom vanilla sock pattern in Twin Sock from Timber Yarns. I bought the yarn at Tracy's Rolling Yarn shop, a yarn truck that travels around Cape Breton island. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
A pair of handknit socks in progress. The first sock is completed and has repeating stripes in 6 shades of blue with deep navy blue contrast heels and toes. The second sock is just a few rows of the toe started on very thin double pointed needles. Two balls of matching self-striping yarn and a mini ball of the contrast yarn sit nearby, in front of a project bag with print of blue hydrangeas.

For the last few hours of this week’s #showMeYourKnits hands prompt, here are my Soccer mitts in Hedgehog Fibers sock (color Juniper) being put to good use in Bryce Canyon National Park. Plus a bonus picture of the park. 🧶 #knitSky
My hands, wearing handknit fingerless mitts, are folded on top of a weathered wooden railing with the rocky landscape of the Bryce Canyon behind me. The mitts are light gray with speckles of blue, purple, orange, and yellow. They are plain stockinette with a short 1x1 rib edge Landscape of Bryce Canyon National Park. A tan plateau in the upper left transitions to red rocky slopes and hoodoos extending off to the right. A light dusting of snow brings out the textures and colors.

I got on the bus home wearing my #crochet cardigan and the woman I sat next to was crocheting for the entire ride. I didn’t say anything to her, because this is Seattle and over ear headphones are a line I cannot cross. It made me smile though. 🧶

On my needles: I just frogged sock 2 again. I’ve got one perfectly fitting sock that I finished a few months ago, but now I’m struggling to get the same gauge for sock 2. I’m determined to get these right. 🧶 #knitSky #showMeYourKnits
One perfect handknit stranded colorwork sock with deep blue starbursts on a white background and vertical color stripes on the arch-shaped sole. The cuff of a second sock on the knitting needles. Two bowls containing crinkly frogged yarn, one blue and one white.

For the #ShowMeYourKnits WHITES & BRIGHTS theme, I dug out a photo of the only white project I've ever knit, my first pair of socks. They were just practice socks, since I learned sock knitting, magic loop, and two-at-a-time knitting all at once, using acrylic sport weight. 🧶 #knitting #knitSky
A pair of white lace handknit socks displayed on blue sock blockers in poor lighting with the low quality of a digital camera in 2011. They don't look great, but they do look definitively like socks.

So excited for the next Knitting History Forum! I just bought my ticket, so I’ll have access to the recordings even though it will happen while I’m asleep (it’s UK time and I’m in the Pacific Northwest). 🧶 #knitting #knitSky www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/knitting-h...

Researching how to keep carpet beetles out of my yarn and hand knits, and this is from the WSU extension service: “Try not to accumulate and store large amounts of woolens or articles made of animal by-products.” Excuse me??? 🧶 #knitting #wool

For #WIPwednesday, here’s the #crossStitch project I’ve been working on since August 2024.
A partially completed cross stitch project next to the kit photo. The finished project will be a river running between evergreen trees with mountains in the background and a starry sky. In my project, the river is complete and the trees are just started.

Preparing for my next knitting project, the Eye Dazzler sweater by Jennifer Berg. * Unblocked swatch * Measuring the blocked swatch * Hanging the swatch with binder clips to simulate the weight of the sweater (per Amy Snell) * Checking for color fastness 🧶 #knitSky #knitting
A tall knitted swatch in hot pink with stockinette at the bottom and a stranded colorwork design of blue zigzag lines at the top. The unblocked swatch is a bit lumpy. The same swatch, now blocked and smoothed out, on a counter with rulers and an iPad showing notes on the measured gauge. The same pink and blue colorwork swatch hanging from two clips on a hanger with 3 black binder clips clipped at the bottom. A short length of the blue yarn and the hot pink yarn, each soaking in a small white bowl. It looks like that the pink yarn has bled a bit, but it’s just the reflection in the shiny white porcelain. Both yarns are color fast.

I really don't think "change needle to change sizes" is best practice for grading. You're asking the knitter to potentially compromise the quality of the fabric by knitting too loose and/or create issues with it by working it too tight. It is 100% possible to grade colourwork mitts & socks. 🧶
