My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

Not sure about the homeownership one, I'd just ban individuals and corporations from being able to own more than say 10 houses. Or tax those that go over at a such psychotic rate to effectively do the same.

Battery-electric vehicle sales in the UK 🇬🇧 show a beautiful growth trend each year 📈⚡ The image shows cumulative monthly BEV registrations by year. This year is up +30.2% compared with January–September last year.

No. Never directly linked. Government is spending money anyway and all drives economic activity.

More an adjacent thought. The op’s point is sadly valid though but there’s transitions in skills and jobs and more reasons and details that won’t fit here But it’s more broadly about ‘being of use’ those highly skilled & experienced workers will still be on benefits, etc.

Really we need those small jobs that welfare/benefits should be directed to. Lolly pop people, street cleaners, someone to check tickets despite everything being automated, and so on. Ultimately it’s the same public money, but one provides a service and ends up in the same place.

The advantage is the parking created could be EV / V2G ready and be batteries for local grid. But ultimately it’s about how we’ve become trapped by car ownership. I’m proposing streets being free from parked cars & only deliveries/loading and unloading are allowed. Some exceptions for disabled

I do live in the uk. But I couldn’t really get into the practicalities of it in one reply. You’d have to potentially lose land/housing nearby and rent the space. Terraced houses are generally central to towns/cities, the problem is retail/business now exist in ‘parks’ only cars get to.

You should legally be required to prove you have an off-street parking space for your car and ban parking on the road. That’s what all those little garages around the backs of housing were for.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

No. If people keep on voting for parties that continue to dip their wick in the hornet’s nest we helped create in the Middle East for fuel they need to suffer the consequences. Remove the freeze on it and build public transport, active travel options, etc. actual investment in infrastructure.

Social media is a distorted reflection of a person and useful for knowing who someone is in part. Like how you, anon poster, are a soulless husk, devoid of joy and whimsy. And how I am occasionally rage-baited into yelling into the void.

Compatible price to other foldable phones. Layout means ‘influencers’ will love it. Best camera points to them and clear screen to frame shot. Fit checks checked off easier. Doesn’t need a tripod as much. Bigger screen to edit on. A Chinese market that prefers the format. So lots of people.

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential
