HMRC is an unsecured creditor for corporation and capital gains tax. It recovers little from bankrupt businesses. Phoenixing also robs the public purse. HMRC wrote-off £12.8bn in 2025-26. Changes to law and HMRC creditor status can raise billions for the public purse.

I had come to Whalers Bay to admire the geology. Then this fellow appeared, apparently to remind me that even the most interesting rocks occasionally need a supporting cast. Fair point. ☀️🌊 #WildlifeWednesday #Kaikoura #NewZealand #NaturePhotography
A New Zealand fur seal sits on a rocky shoreline at Whalers Bay, Kaikōura, New Zealand. The dark brown seal is partly in the shallow blue seawater, with its head raised and long pale whiskers clearly visible. One rear flipper is lifted beside its body, while the other flippers rest on the rocks. The foreground and background consist of pale, weathered carbonate rocks with cracks, small pools and patches of green algae.

Wildflowers don't need to be rare to be remarkable. Dark mullein grows among ordinary meadow grasses... ...but its yellow flowers and purple-red stamens turned my walk into a small botanical discovery. 🌼🌿 🔎 Verbascum nigrum 🌱 #FlowersOnFriday #wildflowers #NaturePhotography #botany #Niedersachsen
A close-up photograph of Verbascum nigrum (dark mullein), a tall wildflower with a slender, upright green flower spike covered in numerous bright yellow, five-petaled flowers. The flowers have distinctive reddish-purple stamens at their centers and bloom at intervals along the upper stem. Broad, textured green leaves grow lower on the stem. The plant stands among tall grasses and seed heads in a meadow, with additional grass stems in the background.

🖖🎂🚀 Sept 8th, 2026 🍾 Star Trek turns 60. 🥂 Six decades of imagining humanity among the stars...and strange rocks along the way. Here’s to the fictional 'Elanin singer stone', real geology & curiosity as our guide to the unknown. 🚀🛰🔭 #StarTrek60 #StarTrek #Geology
A small, smoothly rounded, polished stone rests on a rough grey surface in bright sunlight. The stone is translucent milky white to pale grey, with numerous rounded brown, rust-red and ochre inclusions and bands that give it an intricate, almost planetary appearance. Its glossy surface reflects several small points of light, while its shadow falls to the lower left.

The stone is an Elanin singer stone, a fictional object from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 2 episode “Pen Pals” (1989). In the episode, Dr. Pulaski explains that an Elanin singer stone produces a different acoustic song for each person who holds it; it remains silent when held by Data because he is an android. Data later leaves the stone with Sarjenka as a keepsake after her memories of the Enterprise are erased.

Hello, mother. #SarcophagusSaturday in the #VaticanMuseums brings us this #sarcophagus, famous from the #Renaissance onward, which shows the tragedy of #Orestes as a metaphor for suffering and redemption, with a structural surprise hidden in the #relief. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ORESTES SARCOPHAGUS, C. 140 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This marble sarcophagus front depicts the myth of Orestes carved in high relief. The scene shows the hero avenging his father by slaying his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. Though seemingly too brutal for a tomb, Romans viewed his ultimate absolution as a salvific metaphor for the soul achieving divine purification and peace after earthly suffering. Displayed for centuries in the Aracoeli sacristy before passing to the Barberini and then Clement XIV, its accessible figures deeply influenced Renaissance artists. Beyond the narrative, the composition reveals a sophisticated geometry. The standing figures at the corners and centre act as vertical supports, while the sweeping arcs of drapery and the slumped bodies of the slain form two distinct drooping swags. This underlying structure transforms the scene into a hidden garland sarcophagus, proving how deeply established that rhythmic format was in Roman workshops.

#CastleSaturday Castello Aragonese/Castel San Angelo: Taranto, Puglia. Byzantines built over C4-3 BC Greek fortifications. Then Ferdinand II of Aragon, King of Naples, rebuilt in 1490s. 4 of his 7 towers remain + works through later regimes. Occupied by Italian Navy since 1883, w added maze.
The very chunky Torre della Bandiera round tower on the seaward side of Castello Aragonese in Taranto. A crenelated wall extends back landwards, where other structures connect. In the angle between tower and walls, a hedge has been planted in the form of a maze, with other plants in open areas.A long view along a high wall towards a smaller round tower, the north-easterly of the four at Castello Aragonese. The view is along a somewhat scruffy garden towards the bay of Taranto and the Ionian Sea beyond.

I have just learned that Petrarch, having 'discovered' the sole surviving complete mss of Catullus and Cicero Ad Atticum in Verona, then sat on them - and refused all requests for these manuscripts to be either circulated or copied. Then he died. At which point they could have disappeared. Really.

I can immediately recognise at least three artistic styles and traditions in this photograph of your splendid garden: Turner in the radiant sunlight, Caravaggio in the dramatic chiaroscuro, and the Dutch Golden Age in its sumptuous still-life realism. 👍
