#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1911: Ishi, considered the last Native American to make contact with European Americans, emerges from the California wilderness. He was the last known surviving member of the Yahi people, who were wiped out by state-sponsored genocide, disease and starvation. /1
The man known as Ishi. Ishi is remembered by those who knew him as a man of extraordinary gentleness, quiet dignity and dry humor. He showed no bitterness or malice toward the society that had destroyed his people. Dr. Saxton Pope, Ishi’s close friend and physician, wrote that Ishi possessed a natural, unteachable nobility. Though early newspapers patronizingly framed him as a stoic, unblinking “wild man,” Ishi was actually highly expressive and loved to laugh. He was also particular about personal hygiene and environmental order, a reflection of traditional Yahi spiritual practices regarding purity. Perhaps the most staggering aspect of Ishi’s personality was his lack of hatred. He had witnessed the violent slaughter of his entire world, yet he chose to meet his new life with curiosity and empathy. He didn’t survive through bitterness. He survived through a profound, stoic peace, remaining anchored in his identity until the day he died. Photo credit: Online Archive of California.

#ResistanceRoots Tye Leung Schulze was born on this day in 1887 in San Francisco. She became the first Chinese American woman to vote in a U.S. election and the first to be employed by the federal government. She dedicated her life to serving the Chinese community that had once ostracized her. /1
Tye Leung Schulze. She was a fearless trailblazer who cracked open the doors of American democracy and public service for Asian American women. Standing barely four feet tall, she spent her entire life stepping into rooms built for people twice her size, using her voice to dismantle racial and gender barriers. As the first Chinese American woman to pass the federal civil service exam and the first to vote in a U.S. election, she shattered the myth that Asian American women were passive outsiders. Her marriage to Charles Schulze was a radical act of love that challenged California’s systemic white supremacy. Her most enduring legacy is found on the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown. For more than 60 years, she was a community anchor. She gave a voice to the voiceless, proving that the true measure of a citizen is how fiercely they protect the vulnerable. BBC News headline: "Cervical cancer deaths fall to zero in young women given vaccine." Passage from BBC News article:
"Around 200 lives have been saved in England so far thanks to a vaccine which protects against cervical cancer, according to analysis published in the Lancet.

The first study of its kind, external showed that deaths have fallen sharply since school-age girls were offered the human papillomavirus (HPV) jab in 2008.

Between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded in women aged 20 to 24 - the first time that had happened over a five-year period.

Without vaccination, around 23 deaths would have been expected."

So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.
