I sit down with journalist and author Gil Durán for a conversation about his new book, The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy, and the increasingly influential ideas emerging from the intersection of technology, enormous wealth and American politics.
Gil has spent years tracking the political evolution of Silicon Valley and the ideas surrounding figures such as Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, JD Vance and Curtis Yarvin. His argument is provocative: this isn’t simply about tech billionaires becoming more politically active. It is about a strain of thought that challenges democratic institutions themselves and imagines a very different relationship between technology, capital and political power.
Gil brings a particularly interesting perspective to this conversation. Before returning to journalism, he worked inside politics as an adviser and spokesman for Jerry Brown, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris. He later served as California opinion editor of The Sacramento Bee and editorial page editor of The San Francisco Examiner.
