Oh a pinned actor wouldn't cover the entire screen sadly! Can only have 40 onscreen sprite tiles and also 10 in a horizontal line before they drop out. It's actually done via copying the current screen onto the overlay and then replacing each 8x8 tile with the black background from offscreen.

Eventually, Nintendo decided Mario and Luigi were different heights. There's subtle shade about this in SMBDX. Not only must Peach kneel to thank Mario, but the "camera" is tilted down, showing more foreground like you would photographing shorter subjects. thrillingtalesofoldvideogames.com/mario101

The ending screen of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, which is different for Mario and Luigi. Luigi is Peach's height and they can look into each other's eyes, but Mario is so short that Peach has to crouch down to do that to him. The perspective of the ending screen for Mario is even altered so that it shows more of the foreground, in the way it would be if a photographer tilted his camera down in order to capture subjects that were shorter than normal. This is actually very funny.
