Locals raised £1m for Mayday Saxonvale scheme involving homes and park but Somerset officials agreed deal with London-based real estate company A bold bid by residents of a progressive town in the English West Country who raised almost £1m to create what could have been the UK’s largest community-led regeneration project is in tatters. More than 1,000 residents of Frome in Somerset had clubbed together with the aim of building homes, workspaces, a riverside park and a lido on a brownfield area in their town centre. Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

It seems to have become commonplace to blame net zero for Britain’s high energy bills and/or weak job market… … and I guess I’ll have to explain again why there is very little evidence of this. Britain has plenty of economic problems; net zero is not high on that list (though climate change is) 🧵

This is true in a lot of resi retrofit work too - lots of focus on 'installations', but without good QA infrastructure or serious market/demand building, and often a failure to recognise that joined up strategy and design are necessary! Feels like trying to run with your shoelaces tied together.

Incidentally, Blair is actually correct in his core point: Good governments "start with an idea, a project, a governing purpose, an analysis of what is wrong and a plan to put it right". It's a shame that the rest of his piece is so weak that no-one will ever pay attention to it.
