It's staggering that in October I'm still having to strategically keep the windows open so that the house doesn't overheat. It doesn't feel like autumn yet. And everything is so dry. #Passivhaus

He was very funny - using an extreme position to basically argue that sometimes chasing perfect at the expense of good enough is often counterproductive in terms of energy consumption… and is main point - that form follows fuel - is hard to argue with..!

‘Devastating’: council rejects Frome residents’ bid for regeneration project
Locals raised £1m for Mayday Saxonvale scheme involving homes and park but Somerset officials agreed deal with London-based real estate company A bold bid by residents of a progressive town in the English West Country who raised almost £1m to create what could have been the UK’s largest community-led regeneration project is in tatters. More than 1,000 residents of Frome in Somerset had clubbed together with the aim of building homes, workspaces, a riverside park and a lido on a brownfield area in their town centre. Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

There is more than one standard which achieves all of this using the passivhaus method but with slightly more pragmatic targets based on our shoebox space standards. AECB Carbonlite would be a great start and has the same flexible approach grounded in bldg physics..! Either/or isn’t absolute..!

So - just to be clear on the Lib Dem position - developers should be able to build cheap cold and leaky (air) homes which need more energy for heating/cooling - condemning the occupants to uncomfortable and mouldy homes which cos more to operate that’s not flexible it’s priorising in opex over capex

Have you heard of the Passivhaus standard..? If new houses were built to passivhaus standards in the uk, they would need minimal cooling even if the external temperature got to over 30. I’m not saying none - as that would be as stupid as the absolutist position you have taken..!

It seems to have become commonplace to blame net zero for Britain’s high energy bills and/or weak job market… … and I guess I’ll have to explain again why there is very little evidence of this. Britain has plenty of economic problems; net zero is not high on that list (though climate change is) 🧵

This is true in a lot of resi retrofit work too - lots of focus on 'installations', but without good QA infrastructure or serious market/demand building, and often a failure to recognise that joined up strategy and design are necessary! Feels like trying to run with your shoelaces tied together.
