What a heartless, cruel thing for an elected representative to say.

Every time I listen to This Is Spa Town! It does in fact get better and better and I’m still annoyed I didn’t buy White Hotel tickets for next week as they’re now out and it will be sick

Pop Bands in the News, day two: The time actual OMD took a detour in their tour bus just to pick up a copy of this headline. Elite level snacking.
Andy McCluskey out off of OMD in a convenience store holding up a packet of Mini Eggs, a multipack of Tunnock’s wafers and the Cumberland News and Star with a story about an overnight robbery at a music store in November 2017, while on their way to a gig in Sheffield. The headline is ORCHESTRAL REMOVERS IN THE DARK.

They had seen a post on this very account and made the detour off the M6 specially, and that makes us smug.

I thought this was really good. Increasingly, online shopping is beginning to look and feel like online gambling, and what's worse is the feeling that you'll always win www.newstatesman.com/special-repo...

There should be legal consequences if you let an AI agent do supply chain attacks.
Painting: Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" (1943), oil on canvas — a lean young workman in a suede jacket and blue plaid shirt stands to speak at a town meeting, chin raised, while seated older men in suits and ties look up at him; a folded blue booklet juts from his pocket. Signed top right "NORMAN ROCKWELL"; the blue pamphlet held at bottom centre reads "ANNUAL REPORT of the TOWN of [MONT]", i.e. a Vermont town report.

The picture starts with FDR’s January 1941 State of the Union, which named four freedoms worth fighting for. Rockwell wanted to illustrate them but could not find a handle on the abstraction until he attended a town meeting in Arlington, Vermont, where a neighbour — Jim Edgerton — stood and argued against a new school building that everyone else wanted. The others heard him out. That was the picture.

He used Arlington neighbours as models. The standing man is Carl Hess, a local garage owner. Rockwell put himself at the far left edge. He repainted the canvas four times, fighting the composition; the final solution was to drop the viewer’s eye below the speaker, so we look up at him along with the crowd, and to leave the background empty and dark so nothing competes.

The Office of War Information turned Rockwell down when he offered the series. The Saturday Evening Post ran them instead, one a week from 20 February 1943, each paired with an essay. The Treasury then reversed the government’s position and built the Second War Loan Drive around the paintings: a sixteen-city touring show that drew over a million visitors and sold on the order of $130 million in bonds. Millions of poster reprints followed.

Everyone in that room is white and the scene is a New England idyll, at a moment when Black Americans were running the Double V campaign against fascism abroad and segregation at home. Later artists — Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur’s 2018 restaging among them — have reshot the series precisely to widen who gets to stand up.

One thing I do feel like they do still have is the whole thing about “it just works”. They would rather wait and get the folding phone right and that makes me more likely to consider buying it (just as an example, once again the relative dimensions of the folding phone seem mad to me)

Have considered leaving but I still feel there are security things that I like, plus the ecosystem, just to make it all feel like a lot of effort and money to leave, and probably still be disappointed with anyone else

Would not describe myself as die hard but have been on iPhone for 15 years, and it definitely feels like there are things they’ve got complacent on/things that are just annoying. But mostly it’s quite subtle stuff in settings and set up that I don’t like. ‘You can do this, but you can’t do that’ etc

Being from Birmingham and now living in Liverpool. I have always said it’s the lack of want/need to shout about itself. Birmingham doesn’t have a rivalry with anyone else whereas Liverpool and Manchester are close enough and both big enough to shout about themselves. Brummies are just too chill imo

It’s the whole no one is an actual artist or craftsman any more. They are all content creators. The job is not to paint/carve/pot/draw/play/conduct/design/build etc. it is to make videos of themselves doing these things
