This! I'm pro cycling and any kind of bike share, but feel cycling advocates can do more to embrace e-bikes and how transformative they are for many. Lots of ableism-adjacent stuff with some of the attitudes pooh-poohing it

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a man is standing in front of an older gentleman walking his dog in the park. The man, making a friendly gesture towards the little white dog, asks, “does he bite?” The older man replies, “no.” Panel 2: the little dog grabs the first man’s hand with his paw and gives the back of his hand a sensual smooch. Panel 3: the man pulls his hand back in disgust.

Protected bike lanes linked to nearly double the number of bicycle commuters
Would commuters be more likely to ride a bike if they had the option to ride in a protected lane? New research led by a University of New Mexico School of Engineering faculty member says yes.

It totally depends where you live. I've seen my city make big changes in a relatively short time frame, making it much easier and safer to bike year-round! So I don't think it's nonsense, but it's maybe incompatible with your lifestyle.

Yeah. I'm so happy Victoria is doing its part with cycling and walking. I hear from a lot of people that travel here and realize what's possible in Canada. Just gotta keep chipping away! If we make it awesome and have fun, other people will want to join in.

To be fair, if we look at bike share data, it suggests nowhere near as much winter biking (fig 3). But! I'm not saying people shouldn't have safe means to bike in the winter. They should go for it. But it's okay if people want to be more seasonal and not bike when it's -30 bsky.app/profile/mont...

&rea @0ni0n.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Yeah lots of people arguing with you about this while forgetting that most people just aren't as dedicated, hard core, have the capacity, whatever you want to call it. If someone wants to bike to work when it's nice out and transit/drive in the winter that's fine. Still better than 100% driving.

Given how far mode shift and EVs need to go compared to reducing gas car emissions, it's like moving ships around on the Titanic to argue about this
000
&rea @0ni0n.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good. Many people have EVs and bike and take transit. People need to keep pushing to make mode shift safer and better, while individuals can make their own decisions. North America is lagging far behind most of the rest of the world in EV adoption

&rea @0ni0n.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Of COURSE people will argue about space. But we need less car farts MUCH faster. So let's take the win, and try our best to get people to stop burning so much stuff however we can.

&rea @0ni0n.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Nah, I'm referring to urbanism and cycling groups I volunteered with in the real world. But I don't really need to try arguing about this given that we all want more bikes and less climate change

I kinda disagree, I know plenty of pro cycling folks that are super anti-EV
110
&rea @0ni0n.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Yeah, that's fair. People gotta stop infighting about climate solutions!! And take out their frustration via pedalling!! I do wish we had more cheap, entry-level workhorse bikes here. Maybe there's an opportunity to support the Canadian aluminum industry 🤔

&rea @0ni0n.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Not wrong, but the need for personal vehicles will never go away, so they might as well not cause pollution and climate change. I see a lot of anti-EV sentiment in my pro-cycling circles and it's very out of touch

Thanks, Jim! Your info related the "US company" argument makes me feel a bit better about using it. I've found it a blast so far, and the benefits it's providing the city plus being an affordable way to keep tackling climate change and improve ridership make it a win in my books.

I so appreciate what Victoria is doing with the bike network (it makes walking so much nicer too). Transportation is such a big chunk of individual emissions, it's so nice to have easy and safe alternatives expanding and feel like the city is taking action on climate change!

Many people in BC know that we have a lot of green hydroelectricity here. But not a lot of people know that we don't have enough, and it's projected to get worse. So disappointing to see fossil fuel growth for electrical generation, because lack of planning. #yyj #bcpoli #climatesky

A map graph showing the 62 countries that are autocratizing and democratizing in 2025. There are 44 autocratizing countries, while only 18 countries are democratizing. Autocratizing countries can be found in all parts of the world, including North America and Western Europe. The map graph also shows that there are many large countries autocratizing, such as the USA and India, while most countries democratizing are small, with the exception of Brazil, Poland and Thailand.

May 3rd is the #WorldPressFreedomDay. For this occasion, we use the V-Dem mapping tool to visualize the V-Dem v16 data for the Government censorship effort - media indicator in 2025. To show the differences between the last 20 years, we add a map with data for 2005. 🧵1(7) #Polisky #PolDataSky #Media
Two graphs in the form of world maps, showing the extent governments attempt to censor the print or broadcast media in 2025 and 2005 across the world. The scale ranges from 0 to 4, with 0 meaning that attempts to censor are direct and routine’ to 4 meaning that attempts to censor rarely occur, and if discovered, the responsible officials are usually punished. In 2025, in most of Asia and large parts of Africa governments more often try to censor media. Among the worst affected in 2025 are Chad, Congo, Egypt, and Eritrea in Africa, Afghanistan, China, and Myanmar in Asia, Belarus, Russia, and Turkey in Europe, and Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela in Latin America.
Some of the biggest negative changes between the years 2005 and 2025 can be seen in Afghanistan, China, Egypt, India, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, and the USA. Positive changes between the two years of comparison can be seen in for example Libya, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka.
