I enjoyed this! You identify the accountability sentence as the important one, and that feels right to me. Lack-of-accountability critique is clearly not capability critique!

"It is the nature of being compelled to produce text that fundamentally shifts it from the way humans operate in similar domains, and renders them unpredictable and unreliable for high-stakes tasks." Does "them" refer back to humans, to sequences (a plurality earlier in the para), or to 'the model'?

As many have written about, robots and AI have been allegories for slave labor in SF starting with R.U.R. Since then, the liberal impulse in SF has been to recognize the humanity and sentience of AI. It strikes me that this discourse is uniquely unfit for describing how so-called "AI" exists today.

also ofc, depressingly, in what they are interested in shopping? Though this linking of relational needs to consumer desire actually seems rather theoretically sophisticated: as anthropologists of consumerism say, people buy not in order to be atomic individuals but to perform social relationality.

I'd always thought it hyperbole when people said of media content that it 'made them want to puke'. I hadn't then encountered BBC Radio 4's When It Hits the Fan. Predatory, fawning, systematic misdirection of human intelligence into complacent celebration of arbitrary privilege. Pure fucking evil.

The OpenAI hack of the Austrialian government is better described as misaligned company activity than misaligned model activity. There's been thinking about these artificial agents and how to constrain them for centuries: Hobbes on the state, law which treats companies as legal persons.

But I can also imagine an impatient (& proto-fash) tech bro response: I know from LessWrong/Bentham/whatever that all non-consequentalism is narcissistic clinging to prestige, & so if now we have the 'results', abandon hope all ye scientists & humanists both. I want imaginative distance from this!

I was very struck by the clarity and relative consensus (going by Fields signatories) of the maths community: that proofs are now much cheaper only shows we need to pay more attention to community stuff we value, which as it's hitherto been correlated with proofs we didn't separate out very clearly.

oh, in the hope you'd have an interesting answer! I found the way you framed it striking, and one of the reflexes I have when I see something which seems new is ask 'how new is this?' I feel especial need to do this more wrt tech because some our habits when commenting on tech are so presentist.

Can you think of precedent for, or other examples of, this kind of conservative revaluation (where we want to say we still value X, but in order to do so after some change we now have to say we value it for different reasons)?

Human irreducibility to tasks recalls Caitlin Rosenthal, Accounting for Slavery. She relates (p.201) Gantt's 'task system' & Taylor's 'task idea' to plantation slavery: as Gantt admitted, the word 'task' was 'disliked by many men'. It's mysterious ML use of 'task' hasn't been more widely criticized.

thanks! Ideologiekritik _for Ideologiekritik's sake_ seems an odd inward turn. Art for art's sake (or, for that matter, G. H. Hardy's maths for maths's sake - thank mortality he never got to see the crypto bros braying for war) seems less paradoxical to me. But maybe that's just familiarity.

What on earth happened to Ideologiekritik? I'm struck that - even among leftist cultural commentators - there is so little recourse to the language of ideology. Is it just that 'we tried talking like that, and the world didn't change in ways we hoped?'
