getting tired of making this point but one more: 14 of Indiana's 22 starters last night, including their top 3 receivers, top rusher, & guys who got the punt block/INT/sack & 6/7 PBUs are Cignetti recruits (JMU included) or Indiana lifers. they beefed up the OL & got a QB in the portal. that's it!

the irony of a Bama or OSU fan making a comment about a school "buying their team"

And even that Heisman-winning quarterback was not so highly regarded before the season. The Athletic did a preseason Heisman draft that went 32 (!) players deep, and Mendoza was not mentioned. www.nytimes.com/athletic/653...

there's nothing wrong with living in the portal, but it's also broadly not how Cignetti has been operating, UNLESS you include portaling in all the guys he previously coached at JMU, which is not really the same thing IMO.

Very confused on why anyone cares how Indiana assembled their roster. They just did it better than everyone else and then out-coached everyone and won a natty. Sounds like a skill issue.

Mark CUBAN is alum. The QB is of CUBAN descent. They beat the team from the city known for CUBAN sandwiches. If you can't connect those dots I don't know what to tell you.

QB is the primary reason they won the title and he could not bring those JMU guys without the portal. That's just the new world of CFB. Same as CBB. But we saw Dabo reach these heights and then fall when he lost his long time assistants. Will be interested to see if Cignetti can sustain success.

Rodger, I loved your piece this morning and it summed up a lot of what I have been feeling as a lifelong Hoosier. It’s a reminder that good things can happen if you’re smart enough, focused enough, and work hard enough. Thanks for the lovely article.

This is a great point also why the clowns saying a JMU should never have the chance to compete in the playoffs can get fuct
