You can feel this development if you go to any sporting events, every team is pushing luxury packages for a few thousand fans and trying to make the other 50,000 people in the stadium feel left out

It's a big reason we go to downtown Vegas over the Strip now. The Strip has gotten rid of $10 and $15 tables, and upscale the food so much that a lot of the fun and scuzz is gone. We often need some scuzz in places for a better experience. But profits over everything for these people.

Isn't this kind of what's going on in Vegas now too? Forget the little people--just focus on the top 10% and getting their money. Apparently somebody ran the numbers and decided that's a sustainable model?

It's pretty great seeing those premium seats 50%+ vacant on every broadcast I'm sure they've been paid for and they make even more money not having to provide the drinks and foods associated with the empty seats but man It just makes the live sports experience lifeless

Yes, and worse, Northwestern has specifically cited the airline revenue model with regards to the new stadium they’re building

"Our new stadium will be 10% premium prices, and that will generate-not quite as much as United's-but 40-50% of revenue,"
he said. "That allows us to do things that we couldn't do in the old stadium. To give you
an example, a seat in the end zone in our old stadium was $50. Well, if you're a custodian at Evanston High School, you're not spending $250 to take your family to a college football game ... But we can take that 10% and have them generate the revenue that allows us to create a great experience for everybody, and do a subsidized ticket program for the community ... In the old stadium we were subsidizing the rich."

Wasn't there something like this for the makeshift Northwestern stadium too? Seated a fraction of Ryan Field but had way more opportunities for upselling?

Disney is doing this with their theme parks too. An average family cannot afford to visit, and they're controlling crowds with ever increasing prices. If Disney can make the same (or more) income from half the attendance, it's a win/win for them.

This is the same model airlines use. They break even with economy, and make money on business/1st. For the most part, businesses are buying the expensive stuff in both cases.

Yup, concerts too. Live Nation/Ticketmaster got rid of their extremely popular “Lawn Pass” this year and is now promoting VIP seating and exorbitantly expensive season passes.

Reminds me of free-to-play MMOs...make their money off microtransactions from whales that want to show off to the minnows. The minnows are there to provide the whales incentive to spend.

I first felt it when our zoo starting sending us info on luxury safari trips and offering special packages for visits to the zoo with up close animal talks, etc. I've taken advantage of these kind of things a few times, but it is excessive lately. It's always existed but now it's so blatant.

I refuse to spend my discretionary $ on venues pushing luxury packages. Just don't go. There are so many fun things to see and do without spending an arm and a leg. Just what my hubs and I do but everybody is different.

New Titans stadium is a particularly egregious offender, if anyone cared about the Titans them building a *smaller* stadium with more suites and boxes but 10,000 less seats would have been a national embarrassment
