AndresPlays @andresplays.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I think that it's high time we face the truth that graphics are not going to get any better, nor should they. Chasing hyper-realistic graphics is rotting gaming. Wouldn't you rather have a game that looks like this? 23947
Ed 😬 @darket696.bsky.social · 14/09/2026With the greatest of respect of course graphics are getting better. The problem is that things like Dlss and Fsr that were designed to help with performance on lower tier HW are now the default and optimisation is in the bin. That's what's rotting gaming. (And a great many other things) 010
B.P.T.Ñ.O. Official @bptno.bsky.social · 14/09/2026We need more of these graphics : Sable, Rollerdrome, Windwaker, Okami, Esoteric Ebb, Olli Olli World. 120
Ryanthomjohn @ryanthomjohn.bsky.social · 15/09/2026im trying to escape reality! gimme the art and imagination please 010
JC Dendeath @jcdenden.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I've been playing Battle for Middle-Earth lately for the first time, and it's completely recognisable and functional as as playable Lord of the Rings. Do I need these units to have insanely detailed character models and environments? Nope. Art direction and audio go a long way. 010
Mind5tate | Twitch @mind5tate.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I think there’s 100% levels to the game! With GTA being a technical marvel in hair and skin texture it’s impressive, but what I always remember more are those graphics that establish style and establish a key vision from the devs 010
Noni 🌸 🍱 🎋 @noni.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Depends on the game, I like the realism for certain types of games, but then other games it doesn't need it at all and actually too much detail can be almost creepy. 040
fabittone @fabittone.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Beautifully said, even though that screenshot is a massive endgame spoiler... 🤭 010
Jefftroidvania 🎮 @jefftroidvania.com · 14/09/2026I'd pick a hand-drawn or pixel art game every time over a game that chases hyper-realism just for hyper-realism sake 020
Santiago, the Materia Keeper @materiakeeper97.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Art direction has always been more important to me than hyper realism. 020
gazamcnulty @gazamcnulty.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I will always prefer stylised graphics with a unique art style, over the endless pursuit of realistic/lifelike visuals. Stylised graphics stand the test of time, whereas the *realistic* graphics tend to look dated eventually. 020
Horrormud @humblemudgames.bsky.social · 14/09/2026We should've basically stopped around peak Xbox 360/PS3 level graphics and basically optimized just for lighting and frames per second from there. I think crunch times, budgets, and everything else industry-related would've benefitted from that. 120
Matt Gardner | GameTripper @gametripperuk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026I don't necessarily think it's an either/or, especially as Orbitals is so beautiful. I think the question is more about exploring untapped art forms. We shouldn't rule out hyper-realism, as it's not rotting gaming, because it doesn't really exist. 110
LFC Jude @lfcjude.bsky.social · 14/09/2026To be honest, no. I grew up during the birth of video games and back in the day I'd have been ecstatic with that level of graphics, but I've been spoiled now, and I ain't going backstatic.klipy.comThe Joker: There's No Going BackAlt: The Joker: 'There's No Going Back. Lord of Whales @lordofwhales.bsky.social · 14/09/2026If a game never looks better than kingdom come deliverance 2, Elden Ring, FF16, God of war ragnarok, etc then I’m 100% fine with that honestly. 020
Finn @t3finn.bsky.social · 14/09/2026100%. I wish we could go back to a time when games looked a little less photorealistic, led with a bold art direction and came out at a slightly more regular cadence between entries. 030
RetroPipes @retropipes.org · 14/09/2026I'd prefer a game that seeks its own graphical identity over hyper realism. The Persona games are a great example of that. 020
Tseikkis @tseikkis.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Yeah I started thinking this way quite a bit ago. There's a "good enough" point after which the artistic style, animation quality etc. start mattering more than adding more realistic raytracing. And at least for me, we are past that point. 110
Herr Random 🎮 Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter @herrrandom.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Yup. 100%. I much prefer a unique style and art direction. 030
