The job of management boils down to deciding where to invest company resources to maximize returns. But managers don't want to do their jobs. So instead they started agitating for "velocity" in a foolish belief that they would never have to prioritize one idea over another ever again.

I keep suggesting actual use cases to increase efficiency in gathering the many points of data regulatory professionals need to do our jobs. That's not sexy though. Somehow the agentic tools are going to write the reports for us. We don't write reports. We submit data with civil/criminal liability.

The question is: maximize returns ... on what? Presumably it's "maximize return on investment" but over what time frame? Do you borrow against your own future to make today's numbers look better? I suspect there's a lot of that going on.

It's good to have reflections like yours to describe the absurdity of what's happening right now. I wish we'd stop blaming managers as if they're not already shackled to the "inevitability" speed train inside their orgs. AI can't fix a shitty culture and that responsibility goes beyond any one role.
