Down Here For Your Soul @bombsfall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026I'm a little proud of dogged American dirtbag ingenuity and hubris that makes it baffling to a lot of us that you can't make a cheap AC unit work in almost* any building w/ common and cheap materials which is a large factor in their ubiquity in many places here where they probably shouldn't be. 2037137
cranemonster.bsky.social @cranemonster.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I just told myself I wouldn't weigh in on this. But I live in a 1920's apartment here in Los Angeles. It has door windows. Before we literally just literally cut the hole in the glass, I had rigged the portable AC duct with the winterizing plastic stuff and it worked. Looked jank as hell. 110
Oggie @oggie.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Like I'm DEEPLY embarassed about my AC solution, which is...janky and weird, and kinda required because of how my windows are set up. But uh, it gets me cold air? It looks silly, and it's loud, but... Priorities here. 010
Laruna Softpaw @larunasoftpaw.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Is DIY less of a thing in Europe? If so then there might be a big cultural component missing here. 020
🎵✍🏽Muse en Lystrala📖🎶 @museofpvd.bsky.social · 04/07/2026This reminds me of the time I lived in a studio apartment with shit windows my landlord wouldn't replace. I took old grocery bags, stuffed them into cracks (partly with the aid of a butter knife to really wedge them in) and duct taped them so I wouldn't freeze to death. DIY forever. ♥️ 000
annvon 🖋️🖌️🗡️ @von.bsky.social · 25/06/2026I'm so jealous of your sliding windows, the duct tape monstrosities you'd need for many German tilt/turn windows are crazy 😭 but yeah next summer is AC time baby 230
Vulpez @vulpez.bsky.social · 25/06/2026I haven't seen a single excuse for why they can't make AC work in the UK that can't be summarized as a skill issue 5392
Thomas Spooks 🎃👻💀 @thomasfuchs.at · 26/06/2026I'm a European living in the US and completely agree with you. I don't understand why so many Europeans act so helpless—it's not rocket science to duct-tape a trashbag around a window opening. 020
💀 unfound footage 👻 @burg.bsky.social · 25/06/2026my understanding from the discourse is this opinion is discriminatory as it disparages their cultural identity of "doing things is impossible" 0180

endless screaming @screamingcrumb.bsky.social · 25/06/2026At one point my AC setup also involved a box fan, 10+ feet of plastic tubing, a lot of cardboard and duct tape, plus a coathanger/bungee cord situation to anchor it all to a chair so it wouldn’t fall over. Worked great 0422
Down Here For Your Soul @bombsfall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Fly me and my friend Dan to europe and we will solve your dwelling's AC issues. We can make this happen even in your ancient castles and keeps. We are strong, we are good friends. 929214
Amyville Hoyrror @amyhoy.bsky.social · 26/06/2026i made a portable AC unit work in a 19th c viennese casement window and a sliding glass door in tucson, arizona in july (the height of summer) you really nailed it. the attitude boggles me even tho i lived in austria for years 060
Anya 🌹"Chinny" | CZGoldEdition @czgoldedition.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Real. I'm the only American in a household of 3 over here, living with 2 Dutchies. During the worst of it I borrowed an AC unit from my barber who closed shop for the duration and got to work with duct tape and cardboard. This is the purest form of my heritage at work. 212510

Max Kaehn @mithriltabby.bsky.social · 25/06/2026I once lived in an apartment that had a fireplace, but we were forbidden to install air conditioners in the window. I figured "Chimneys pull hot gases upward" and put an air conditioner in the fireplace with a cement mixing tray to catch the water it pulled out of the air, plus a cardboard facade. 920519
Electrichead (The Agony) @electricheadpt2.cryptoanarchy.network · 25/06/2026I'm in two buildings in a row where the windows are of a kind where you can't install window units, so at some point they just cut through the brick to shove them directly into the wall. I'd think redoing the windows would be easier but I'm not an architect or carpenter so what do I know. 180

Depravity Pike @gravity-pike.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Honestly, the big problem is that people are unprepared, and the sudden heatwave hitting the entire country at once means that infrastructure isn't there to support it. 270
