The conservative movement has turned against reality on every scientific issue of our time, from gun violence to climate change to epidemiology. If campuses are ideologically homogenous, it's not because academia has ostracized conservatives. It's because conservatives have ostracized academia.

Personally I think it's totally defensible for the head of a meteorology department to say, "you can't work here unless you believe in climate change." That department is going to end up with zero conservatives in it but it's not the department that needs to change!

And those opinions are so boring. I remember being in a History of Science class and at the mere mention of Evolution someone says it isn't real. The professor was very confused at the interruption. Wrong class! Not up for debate! Not a place for debate about that!

Besides the misuse of "believe", that's spot on. Perhaps something like "you can't work here unless you understand what climate change is, how we worsen it and how deep in the pit we are" would fit better. Also, if they can make it to the end of the sentence, they're probably already a good fit.

When you take the idea of "diversity of opinion" completely literally, you can end up at "qualified people and unqualified people should both be taken equally seriously" and then have panels where people are incorrect about the most basic facts of their supposed expertise. bsky.app/profile/cele...

Went to a campus event on disasters (focusing on Hurricane Helene and the LA wildfires) yesterday, and one of the panelists straightforwardly told the whole room he doesn't think humans cause climate change. UChicago is really upholding its commitment to diversity of opinion on campus.

I recall that as early as the 80ies it was pretty normal, that US conservatives opined that climate change is not only real but needs addressing urgently. In Europe, conservatives are lazy about it but would not doubt it by a vast majority

not quite exactly the same as your example with meteorology, but im a grad student in an ecology & evolutionary biology department. yes, there def are conservatives in the dept, but, as you can imagine, people who study eeb tend to be people who already believe in evolution, earth is 4.54 ± 0.05

The right wing argument here is just "colleges need to give our made-up nonsense the same institutional weight as scientific rigor" And from their perspective, there's no reason for right wingers not to make this demand. It worked for journalism. May as well try it in Academia

It's lately opened my eyes to the attack on liberal arts degrees. It's important and OK for people in fields that aren't strictly for ROI to have valuable critical thinking skills. Even people who won't make millions on wall street can benefit from higher education.

I applied for a job as a mechanic, and explained in the interview that I think gasoline is a conspiracy and isn't actually required to power cars, and they wouldn't give me the job for some reason! They are discriminating against me and my ideas!

There's also lots of conservative academics. Business, economics, law, engineering all have lots of conservative professors. The overall number is a lot lower than it used to be, because conservatives don't value the humanities and don't agree with many sciences.

As a smart person who I wish I could credit said, Climate change isn't a matter of belief, any more than gravity is. You either accept the science or you don't. That's how we should talk about it.
