In the past people bought a lot & build a house. Some people are starting doing the same, buying lots in semi-rural areas. Some with more income are able to build a traditional house, others a mobile home or a tiny home .

Trump was the landlord in NY who got cited by the Nixon DOJ as being racist. Because there were never vacancies for Black People,but when the white federal inspector came (undercover) there were vacancies. This was the 70's and Trump had put a big "C" for colored on the Black applicant's file.

The fact that the New Deal/postwar strategy for creating a robust middle class was to use homes as repositories of wealth does intensely complicate solutions to the housing crisis. Scarcity is part of the reason that family homes gained value disproportionate to what was paid for them.

He's actually not wrong.* My house has appreciated from $187K to $425K in 10 years. But that's mainly because of the housing shortage. Build enough houses for people who need them, and my house has to lose equity or at least slow its appreciation. *but he's still a crazy asshole.
