I just recognise that there's a very deep sensitivity here. It can be hard for non-Jews to understand the intergenerational trauma and terror of people who have been subject to centuries of extermination attempts, merely for being who they are. Please try to bear the context in mind. Thank you.

So I read your whole thread, as you asked me to do. And there's nothing new here. I've seen it all before. And so I'll say what I've said before:

Your description there accords with my understanding having looked into it all, but I would go further. Some forms of Zionism don't even necessitate the existence of a Jewish homeland in the region. Cultural Zionism, for example. Then there's the fact that many Palestinians want the two-state...

Thanks. I really don't care what parties have to say about ideologies. It sounds like they're cancelling a comic for bigotry. I care about war crimes, how we end the systematic killings, arms sales and a path to peace. But cos some want to grandstand we're talking about an abstract not the real.

Zionism in that context is anti-racism via racism, and anti-colonialism via settler-colonialism. That's always been the issue. The burning question being does Jewish safety matter more than Palestinian rights? And that's still the question today regarding Zionism & Israel. These may interest you 👇

Londoncolin @colcro.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

This is a clear and thoughtful thread, the issue is that the non racist, non-colonial, understandable iteration of Zionism never materialised and was always impossible without displacing Palestinian people. Whereas the racist version exists and is supported by the vast majority of the Israeli people

so its a religion? kind of like christianity and congress? im a hindu. anything can be a god. If you believe it so much that it makes you intentionally kill more innocent people than the other side, it must control you and you must value it above human life, therefore its a god.

*The road to hell is paved with good intentions* I think there is confusion here on past and present tense. You talk of Zionism as an aspirational ideological theory, which I'm sure it was to many. But we've now seen it in practice and the reality of what Zionism actually entails. Racism.

you’ve made the glaring cognitive error of positing that racism is only racism if it’s unambiguously intended to be racism

Thank you @georgemonbiot.bsky.social, but I am lacking the ability to understand how this could help to solve the acute suffering of the Palestinians and how to stop the genocide currently ongoing by the Israeli government and it’s allies.

A desire for safety is understandable. A desire for so-called safety at the expense of destroying the lives and safety of another group of people, is not just unsafety for the victims, it's a constant state of war. Safety requires equality.

Eva Montemaggi @evamontemaggi.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

I’m afraid the people who attacked you aren’t just ignorant of Zionism as a historical phenomenon that has changed dramatically throughout time & shaped by holocaust, state of Israel… they also take a very narrow ethnic-nationalist interpretation of ‘Jewish state’. Bumper-sticker thinking.

Leo DP @leodp.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

You may be right, but what you are referring to is Zionism through history. I think nowadays Zionism is practically synonym of the racist and colonialist policy of Israel. And it's a shortcut for talking of such practices. But I'm ready to change my mind on words I use.

Superb thread which taught me a lot. Also a reminder how often complex issues are condensed into sound bites (for convenience or by malevolence) and then picked up by people who, mostly innocently, assume a meaning and take a position when they almost certainly don't know the full picture 1/2

‘An outcome of Zionism is racism’ it’s a pretty nuanced differentiation. Nuance though…could ee sll do with more of it? An interesting post.

Generalisation of groups of people is bad, sure. So I gues the first people to stand up against the genocide are the Zionists, I mean, judging by you thread, they are the one's who can relate the best to the Palestinians. In practice and reality this doesn't seem to be the case does it?

But the one thing that gets me, the place I know as little Jewish Ulster — is its founding fathers knew from the outset that it was a racist ideology. They wrote about it in their essays & said it in their speeches. I also understand that Liberal Zionism was sold as a socialist home for Jews.

seacide @antiseacide.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

Zionism doesn't go back that far, does it? I respect the legitimate desire of Jews to be free of persecution over centuries in Europe, but the phrase 'Zionism' wasn't used before the late 19th century, was it? It's a nationalist movement that's clearly been hijacked by supremacist ideology.

I read it all and I don't disagree with any of your setting of an historical perspective. I do believe, however, that things are very different today, even the last year. What we have here is a crisis of meaning: what I like to call 'Humpty Dumpty' syndrome.

Jogeran @jogeran.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

George, do you think there's a possibility that because you have relatives and ancestors that suffered persecution, that it might mean that your first impulse is to defend their perspectives? And that maybe this means a lot of your reasoning is working backwards from "My ancestors weren't evil"?

Good. And please try to bear in mind that there are Palestinians - in the UK, around 20-30,000 - who have suffered trauma, and whose voices are unheard throughout this debate (as here). It's hard for non-Palestinians to understand... (Btw, the co-sponsor was Stephen Kapos, a Holocaust survivor.)

Colonizing a land involves dehumanizing the people already living there. That is racist to the core. I grew up fed the racist myth that Palestine was mostly desert inhabited by Bedouin nomads, that the Jews transformed it into a lush garden, they made the desert bloom.

Gabor Maté, Holocaust survivor, was a Zionist for all the reasons you articulated. Until he went there and saw what it was in practice. He cried for 2 weeks on his return and rejected it. This is NOT to dismiss the pain and longing he had.

George firstly the vast majority of us who supported the motion have NOT called you a genocide lover etc. So can we drop the repeated mentions of abuse as it’s really not the point & it’s misleading. Would it be possible for you to debate Lubna, the Palestinian who put forward this motion?

Sam Fischman @schrodingercatgirl.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

You make a subtle point and I recognize how difficult it is to do that on here. "Zionism" is a word with many meanings: Is it support for Israel's actions? Is it that Israel should be a Jewish State? Is it a 2 state solution? Is it Jews migrating to escape genocide? Is it Jews committing genocide?

121

markh60.bsky.social @markh60.bsky.social · 8h

Interesting piece but you do not have to prove that every Zionist is racist to argue that Zionism, is an ethnonationalist project that denies Palestinians equal rights and self-determination, is racist And no one is saying Jewish safety must come at the expense of Palestinian freedom and equality
